Image: Juergen Braehmer vs. Jose Maria Guerrero on 1/28By Allen Fox: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO’s) will be fighting for the first time in almost two years when he faces little known Jose Maria Guerrero (29-2-1, 11 KO’s) on January 28th at the Grand Elysee Rotherbaum in Hamburg, Germany.

The fight with the 34-year-old Guerrero will take place at super middleweight rather than light heavyweight. It may be that Braehmer is thinking of trying his luck at this weight after previously fighting at super middleweight four years ago in 2007. Either way, Braehmer is going to have major problems whether he stays at light heavyweight or moves back down to super middleweight because the talent in those two divisions has improved greatly in the last couple of years to the point where it’s difficult to imagine seeing a limited fighter like Braehmer ever winning another major title again.

He’s good enough to win one of those gimme interim straps but as far as the real thing goes, Braehmer has probably seen the last of winning any of those. Braehmer, 33, lost his World Boxing Organization title last year when he backed out of a fight against Nathan Cleverly due a last second injury. Braehmer also backed out of a fight against WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov because of an injury. The last time that Braehmer fought was in April 2010 against a fighter named Mariano Nicolas Plotinsky in a title milking fight for Braehmer.

Braehmer is going to need to get back in gear if he wants to make the most of what little career he has left. He can’t afford to take another two years off from boxing and find any success, not that he’ll find any from this point forward.
