Image: It's time for Matchroom to roll the dice with Kell BrookBy Marcus Sales: It was announced today that Kell Brook (26-0) will return to the ring on March 17 to headline a show in his hometown of Sheffield. Brook recently returned from America where he was impressive in stopping the heavily overmatched Luis Galarza (17-3.) I say impressive because Brook showed signs of class that night with a good variety of shots and a level of patience that is needed to finish off opponents at a higher level.

The reason I do not rave about ‘the performance however, is because we did not learn all that much. Galarza is a good American club boxer, someone who plys their trade up and down the country ensuring a tough night for fellow limited opposition. The truth is he wouldn’t last two rounds with the divisions top names.

Brook has made it clear that he wants to be the best and Eddie Hearn has made it clear that he will deliver a World Title shot to Brook in 2012. What interests me however is the opponent for the March 17th show. ‘Im ready to put in a devastating performance against a tough opponent.’ What does this mean exactly? We obviously won’t be seeing Brook facing Pacquiao or Mayweather. Berto and Ortiz are preparing to face each other. If the WBA Champion Senchenko (32-0) was being considered then we would have been able to read between the lines that a World Title will be in the mix on March 17th. We didn’t. Shane Mosley will have no interest in coming to Sheffield to fight Kell Brook, he will only be looking for big money fights during the twilight of his career. Mike Jones, also 26-0? Too risky for Matchroom. The young American could ruin future plans for Brook. That’s not to say that Brook couldn’t beat Jones, I just don’t feel Matchroom will want to find out just yet. And therein lies my issue with Brook.

We all want to find out. Can this bright lad from Sheffield cut it at the top. Can he cut it in the ring with names like Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz, Mike Jones, Senchenko, Jan Zaveck? One thing is for sure, we won’t find out on March 17th. I suspect the opponent will be Matthew Hatton. While I admire Hatton for his bravery against Saul Alvarez, he is not the test that Brook needs. Brook should be fighting Zaveck or Jones next and then look to be facing the winner of Berto v Ortiz. Unfortunately i am probably dreaming.
