Is Donaire being protected from Rigondeaux?

Image: Is Donaire being protected from Rigondeaux?By Dan Ambrose: Guillermo Rigondaux (9-0, 7 KO’s) put the super bantamweight division on notice last Friday night in easily beating World Boxing Association (WBA) World super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (20-1, 11 KO’s) by a 6th round TKO to win his WBA belt at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rigondeaux knocked down a very good Ramos two times in the fight and halted him with a series of straight lefts until putting him down with a left to the body. Immediately after getting the win, Rigondeaux called out former two division world champion Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) to try and get a fight with him.

Thus far, however, the silence has been deafening from the 29-year-old Donaire and their mutual promoter. Donaire vs. Rigondeaux would be the perfect fight for the division, because it would prove who the best fighter is in the division.

It sure isn’t 35-year-old WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KO’s), who looked mediocre at best in beating a past his best 36-year-old Rafael Marquez in his last fight last October.

That’s the thing with rankings, if you go by them they’ll have you believing that Nishioka is the best fighter in the super bantamweight division when a better choice would be the 31-year-old former two-time Olympic gold medalist and 6-time Cuban National champion Rigondeaux.

I see him as the best fighter in the super bantamweight division right now by far. But what’s sad is that Donaire will be fighting Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title next month on February 4th and then he’ll be going after Jorge Arce and Nishioka in back to back fights.

Rigondeaux will be off limits for Donaire and you can expect that to stay that way. I’m wondering if Donaire will ever face Rigoneaux? I think it’ll be academic that won’t ever be facing him once Donaire moves up in weight to the featherweight division in 2013.
