Froch making a mistake with Bute two-fight deal

Image: Froch making a mistake with Bute two-fight dealBy Scott Gilfoid: The talk is that former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch will sign a two-fight deal with IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute for two fights in 2012 with the first bout taking place in Montreal, Canada. I think this is a bad idea for Froch career-wise. First of all, it’s a bad idea for a slow fighter like Froch to be fighting a guy that’ kind of quick on his feet like Bute in the first place.

That’s a bad style matchup for Froch and I wouldn’t put Froch in with someone like Bute if I was Froch’s promoter. Bute is all wrong for Froch. But right now Froch is coming off of a one-sided loss to WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward last month in the Super Six tournament and for Froch now to have to travel to Canada for the first fight of the two-fight deal, that’s just dumb.

You never want to put someone in a bad position coming off of a loss like the one Froch took against Ward. That fight wasn’t close and you got to figure that Froch’s confidence is at an all-time low regardless of the front that he’s been trying to put up by saying the fight was close and he was just having an “off night.”

Froch got whipped and I don’t think he believes what he says. But even if he is crazy enough to think he was just having an off night, it’s still career suicide for Froch to march into Canada and fight Bute in a place where Bute escaped getting knocked out in the 12th round by Librado Andrade in 2008 in the infamous long count fight.

Why would Froch agree to fight Bute there after seeing that fight? Besides that, there are other foreign fighters that have gone to Canada and found themselves on the losing end in bouts they thought they should have won. Some boxing fans see Canada as the second Germany in terms of a place where it’s next to impossible for a visiting fighter to win a decision. This is meaningless if Froch can knock Bute out, but it doesn’t make you feel good to watch Bute’s first fight against Andrade and see Bute seemingly knocked out but given a whole lot of time to get back up to his feet after the 12th round knockdown. I mean what was that? Bute couldn’t even stand on his own two feet and had to lean against the ropes and he won the fight.

I think this isn’t a smart move for Froch to take these two fights with Bute. Froch needs to let some quicker fighters like the Dirrell brothers knock off Bute and then Froch can try and fight the Dirrell brothers. Bute’s advantages in foot and hand speed are completely neutralized by the Dirrell brothers and then it would only come down to Bute hoping he can win a controversial decision.

With the power and the hand speed that the Dirrell brothers have over him, I see Bute getting knocked cold by either Andre or Anthony Dirrell. Froch could then try and fight one of the Dirrells and try to mug one in Nottingham like in his previous fight against Andre Dirrell in 2009.
