Image: Donaire wants Arce, Nishioka and Rigondeaux-Ramos winnerBy Dan Ambrose: Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) goes after his third world title belt next month against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KO’s) in a fight for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Donaire doesn’t plan on standing in one place if he can pick up the title, as he wants to then face Jorge Arce (59-6-2, 45 KO’s) followed by a fight against WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KO’s).

The last thing that Donaire, 29, wants to do before leaving the super bantamweight division is to fight the winner of the Guillermo Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KO’s) vs. Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KO’s) for the WBA World super bantamweight title. That will be the last remaining belt for Donaire to pick up before he moves up in weight to the featherweight division.

In an interview at eastsideboxing.com, Donaire said “I’ll probably fight two or three more times before moving up in weight. The guys I’m interested in now are [Jorge] Arce and Nishioka. Those guys are the most experienced and the most compelling in a good fight. The other guys can prove themselves with their titles. The fight I’m looking at for now is Arce and Nishioka, and hopefully after that Rigondeaux or Ramos’ belt. With me, the goal is to unify all the belts.”

Although Donaire said he wants to fight the winner of the Rigondeaux vs. Ramos fight, he didn’t sound definite about it and it’s likely that his promoter Bob Arum will move Donaire up in weight rather than risking him against Ramos or Rigondeaux. Nishioka has in the past been considered to be the top fighter in the division, but he’s getting up there in age at 35 now, and it’s highly doubtful that he could handle guys like Ramos or Rigondeaux.

Donaire will have a big power, speed and size advantage against Vazquez Jr. next month and he’s expected to win this fight and then move onto take on the 32-year-old Arce, who recently vacated the WBO belt to move down in weight to grab the WBO bantamweight title. Arce fights Lorenzo Parra on February 18th, and he’ll need to win that fight for him to get the Donaire bout next.
