The Alamodome has a maximum seating capacity of 40,000 for a boxing event, so Arum is expecting to fill half of it for this fight. It’s not just Chavez-Rubio on the card. There is also a fight between Nonito Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. that will be taking place on the undercard. However, it’s doubtful that either of those two fighters will be bringing in huge fans numbers like the ones that Arum is envisioning.

Chavez Jr. has only held the World Boxing Council title since last June and will be making his 2nd title defense of the belt. He’s not held it nearly long enough for him to win over a lot of new fans. However, Chavez Jr. already has a built in fan base because of his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez, who was one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time. Chavez had tons of fans in Mexico and in the United States, and it’s only natural that Chavez Jr. would have that fan base automatically transferred to him once Chavez Sr. retired.

Arum has done a good job of keeping Chavez Jr. unbeaten with careful matchmaking and the fans have really bought into the Chavez Jr. with him winning.

Arum says a lot of tickets have already been sold for the fight and there’s still a month to go before the fight on February 4th. Chavez Jr. was supposed to fight Sergio Martinez but he asked the WBC permission to fight Rubio instead and the WBC gave Chavez Jr. his wish.
