Arum: Mayweather’s not going to get Cotto next

By Dan Ambrose: Promoter Bob Arum thinks that Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t serious about wanting to face his fighter Manny Pacquiao on May 5th, and sees it as merely game playing on Mayweather’s part to give himself cover for the eventual backlash that he’ll be receiving once he does make an announcement as to who his next opponent will be.
How Arum will block that fight is the question, since Cotto is no longer under contract with Top Rank and is only fighting for them on a fight to fight basis. Arum either will be selecting Cotto for Pacquiao next in June or he’s got some kind of contract options that are still tying Cotto to Top Rank.
Arum wants to not only put Cotto in with Pacquiao in the near future, but he also wants to set him up with a fight against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after he faces Marco Antonio Rubio next month.
So you can see, Arum doesn’t want Cotto’s marketing value to be tarnished by having him fight Mayweather and likely get schooled and beaten badly. He wants Cotto to be still as he is now, looking good off of three consecutive wins over the beatable guys – 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga, Yuri Foreman and Antonio Margarito – that Arum has put Cotto in with.
It’s too bad that Cotto won’t be fighting Mayweather because that would have been an excellent fight. Cotto has good power, a great jab and with his new style of fighting, he would make it interesting for a while until Mayweather figured him out.

Dan your so confusing! First you hate on Cotto at every chance, and call his style running. Now you praise him in this article saying “Cotto has good power, a great jab and with his new style of fighting, he would make it interesting for a while until Mayweather figured him out”….Dude your a walking contradiction!

cot would put up a great fight with mayweather. their skill level is about the same just maywether is faster but cotto has more power
aurm and pacquiao are both scared of mayweather period! at first manny was cool with the smaller purse,now he wants a 50/50 split. did pacquiao give margarito mosley,cotto or marquez or clottey a 50/50 split?

i would love to see pac man fight cotto at junior middleweight but he wont as he knows he will be beaten. When they fought at a catchweight before cotto was left weakened & look at how banged up manny [acquio was then. I think cotto would knock him out & thats the reason you wont see hi fight at light middle weight. Now they might fight at welterweight & if they do the result will depend on how much strength cotto loses in making the weight. Cotto or pacman at any weight against pbf would be great fights & i think pbf would come out on top. I do think the pacman camp are very cautious to get everything in pacmans favour & if they dont get it they wont have the fight & i think that will continue until pacman knows he is past his best then he will fight pbf just for a retirement payday knowing he will lose.

Man oh man! This is why I hate promoters. They should be eliminated from boxing. Boxers should be able to promote themselves, so they can set up their own fights. Or maybe there should only be one promoter in all of boxing.

again manny pacquaio, like margachito, has proved that u have to cheat in order to beat cotto. marquez destroyed pacquaio with counter puches. now, does anybody think that marquez can beat cotto? lol hell no. cotto DESTROYED margachito with his amazing counter punching so u can IMAGINE what cotto would do to pac if pac takes the test, even if he doesnt take the test with cotto. not to mention the trouble that pac had aginst margachito when they fought lol and again cotto DESTROYED margachito wit no problem. he will do the same thing he did to chito and thats going for the eye as punishment and with pacs eye, i see the same thing that happened to chito happening to pac. and people would say that floyd would beat cotto cuz floyd is the best in his devision but cotto isnt in his devision. neither cotto or floyd would give their worst in a bout but i see cotto coming out as victorious

i think EVERYONE is pretty much seeing now that ARUM, Roach, & lastly PACQUIO are all SCARED to DEATH by facing Floyd, cause their cover would bl own, no more revenues by facing beatable fighters. They stay relevant by keeping Floyds name in their mouth. Roach was trying same appraoch with AMir, who wouldnt stop talking bout Floyd, but yet got schooled by a b-list fighter like lamont, now hes finally taken a chill pill.
