But before Arreola can get the shot, he’s got to beat #11 ranked contender Eric Molina (18-1, 14 KO’s) on February 18th at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. For the 30-year-old Arreola, this will be his 7th consecutive soft opponent he’s faced since he was beaten by Tomasz Adamek in April 2010.

Arreola pretty much abandoned the idea of fighting his way back into another title shot by facing quality heavyweights after the Adamek loss and has stuck strictly with beatable guys that Arreola couldn’t possibly lose to.

Molina unfortunately falls into that category. He’s tall at 6’5”, but slow and weak, and not in Arreola’s class. The only sanctioning body that has Molina ranked in the top 15 is the World Boxing Council and you have to wonder what they were thinking when they put him at #11 above Odlanier Solis and Dereck Chisora.

The Molina vs. Arreola fight will be televised by SHOWTIME and it will also have Paul Williams vs. Nobuhiro Ishida and Tavoris Cloud vs. Gabriel Campillo on the same card.

Arreola’s promoter Dan Goosen told ESPN writer Dan Rafael “The game plan is simple – we’re looking to fight for the world title this year, end of story. Chris has every opportunity to make history and accomplish the goal that was set many years ago when he started out, to have him be the first Mexican American to hold a heavyweight championship.”

I think it’s possible for Arreola to win a heavyweight title but only if Vitali retires and Wladimir doesn’t show any interest in claiming his belt after he goes. If Wladimir and Arreola fight head to head for Vitali’s bout, Arreola will get knocked out and will likely have to wait another two to three years for another title shot. He’s 30 right now, so it’s possible that Arreola could be back by the time he’s 33. He turns 31 in March, and if he’s to get a title shot in 2012, it’ll be late in the year. Arreola will lose and then have to work his way back up for another crack.
