Image: Arce a possibility for Donaire if he gets by Vazquez Jr. on February 25thBy Dan Ambrose: Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) has a potential big money fight on the horizon for himself if he can get by Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 Ko’s) in their fight for the vacant World Boxing Council super bantamweight title on February 4th on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Marco Antonio Runbio fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Former four division world champion Jorge Arce (59-6-2, 45 KO’s) is very interested in facing Donaire if Arce beats Lorenzo Parra (31-3-1, 18 KO’s) in their rematch next month on February 18th in Mexico and Donaire gets by Vazquez Jr. It’s almost a lock that Donaire will beat Vazquez Jr., as this kid is still very young and he looked bad in losing to Arce by a 12th round TKO last year in May.

Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum will probably go for the idea of having Donaire fight Arce, as he’s had major problems finding big fights for Donaire in the last four rounds under his guidance. In four years, Donaire has had only two reasonably big fights against Vic Darchinyan and Fernando Montiel. Other than that, it’s been Donaire facing less than spectacular opposition. Arum does have a couple of guys that Donaire could make good money against in Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa, but he’s been very reluctant in putting Donaire in with those guys. It could be that Arum thinks Donaire would get be blown out by them and he doesn’t want to see that happen. But at least Donaire could get a big payday in losing.

Arce may not get by Parra next month because the two fighters went at it two years ago in September 2010, and the fight was ruled a 10 round draw. I saw the fight and had Parra winning by four rounds. Arce didn’t look bad because he wasn’t in shape or anything. He just looked like he was facing a better fighter than him in Parra. Now two years later and two years older, I can’t see anything changing for the 32-year-old Arce. However, he may fight well enough a controversial decision. The fight is taking place in his home country of Mexico and Parra is from Venezuela. He’s going to have to do something really special to beat Arce at home, like maybe knock him out.
