Image: Ward could fight at light heavyweight for next boutBy William Mackay While most boxing fans are assuming that WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) will be fighting his next fight against one of the top super middleweights in the division and or one of the champions like IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, Ward said after his win over Carl Froch last Saturday that he may elect to fight his next fight at light heavyweight against one of the top fighters at that weight.

Right now Ward said he wants to take it easy for a while after being Froch to capture the Super Six tournament trophy.

Ward said to RingTV “I have the option of going up to light heavyweight for the right fight. Going up there for the right fight is an option. So we just have to sit back and see. I think that I’ve earned the right to sit back and pick the right fight for the right price.

Ward has already said that he doesn’t want to fight Bute next because he has spent the last few years facing B level opposition instead of challenging himself to fight better fighters. If Ward decides to fight a light heavyweight opponent in his next fight he’s going to have to fight someone like Jean Pascal, Nathan Cleverly or Bernard Hopkins if he wants to make any money. A fight against Chad Dawson won’t bring in the big money that Ward wants because he doesn’t attract huge crowds at his fights.

Pascal, who fights out of Canada, does bring in big crowds whenever he fights in Canada. Unfortunately, Pascal was recently exposed by Hopkins and lost his WBC title. A fight against Pascal may still draw big numbers in Canada, but it’s not exactly appealing to fight a guy that lost his last fight. Ward can fight Cleverly, but he’d have to agree to fight him in the UK for it to bring in big money. Cleverly is pretty inexperienced despite holding down the World Boxing Organization title. He’s a step down from Froch, but it’s an easy fight where Ward could get a good payday.
