The fight that did not happen top boxing news story of 2011
By John F. McKenna (McJack): Ironically the fight that did not happen is the biggest news story in boxing in 2011. There were other top boxing news stories in 2011 such as WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) being reduced to a mere mortal in his fight with Shane Mosley last May and more so when he won a highly controversial decision against his perennial nemesis WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s) on November 12.
Former World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) also took a big hit after his one sided loss to heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s). It wasn’t just that “The Hayemaker” lost, it was the manner in which he did it. He continually flopped to the canvas whenever “Dr. Steelhammer” came close enough to inflict any damage. The only heavyweight belt Wladimir does not now hold is the WBC belt that his brother Vitali holds.
There were numerous stories in the last few months of 2011 that gave boxing fans hope for the future. WBA/WBC and The Ring super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) won the Super Six Tournament that sometimes seemed like it would never end. Ward demonstrated that he is the class of the division by dominating everyone he faced in the tournament.
WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) who scored a stunning 2nd round KO over Fernando Montiel last February promises to be around for years as an exciting fighter.
There were many disappointments like the Chad Dawson – Bernard Hopkins controversy. The word controversy seems to be synonymous with the year 2011. When former champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) lost to new WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) on December 10 the fight was rife with controversy and Golden Boy Promotions CEO plans to appeal the outcome of the fight on January 18 and 19 of 2012.
There were many other top boxing news stories in 2011. But easily the top boxing story is the failure of the powers that be to put together the one fight every boxing fan wants to see. It is an endless saga of stories that the deal is about to be made only to be followed by another denial and one of the fighters saying he is unaware that talks are even going on.
What was most frustrating to fans was that WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) was sentenced to 90 days in jail for domestic violence yesterday.
The sentence will begin in early January. Given that Floyd has not fought since last September and may need a tune up before facing Pacquiao, the fight could be delayed indefinitely. Pacquiao may very well want to fight another opponent next May or June. The reality is that the Pacquiao – Mayweather fight may never happen.

Guys why are we even interested in Mayweather vs Pacquiao anymore? The mega fight is over, even if it does happen in the next year or two its not worth watching.
by that time Pacquiao will have been in more wars and Floyd still inactive and getting older.
Forget about these chumps, there everything we said they both were. FAKE CHAMPIONS
This recent setback shows that Mayweather is a disgrace to boxing. He is a lousy role model and unfortunatly young kids will be looking up to him thinking its acceptable to smack around your partner. Now any chance of fighting pac man has gone down the drain and even die hard mayweather fans MUST ACCEPT this is HIS FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Floydiots…. your idol is a perfect example for your children.. Manny went to the White House.. Floyd goes to jail…
its all bulls~~t it could have happened but too many egos involved during negotiation
@chop chop….clearly an asian Pac lover, I like pac for his exciting fights, but dont preach about how he’s intelligent and changes tactics when he fell short against Marquez and had no idea of how to change it.
And as for that win, similar to chisora vs helenius, its stamped all over with corruption by the fat cat promoters who couldn’t afford for their cash cows to lose.
@me those ms13 would beat him down in sparring
For Floyd Manny fight, the title should be “the fight that will never happen” you must go back circa 2009 to understand this. Some fights are meant not to be made for reasons known only to educated fight fans (a true boxing fan).
Posters: Pride79 vs. yatusabes! But yatusabes is afraid!
@ me: Your kidding about Floyd fighting as a prisoner right?
” There were other top boxing news stories in 2011 such as WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) being reduced ”
REALLY, ARE YOU THAT PATHETIC THAT YOU THINK A MAN WHO BEATS ON A WOMAN, THREATENS HER LIFE, IN FRONT OF HIS CHILDREN, AND TAKES THEIR PHONES SO THEY CAN”T CALL 911, IS LESS IMPORTANT?
Floyd is a cheater on weight so he won’t have to dehydrate on the Marquez fight that’s cheating they should penalize for cheating on weight not just money
cry floydiots cry
run floydee run
hide floydee hide
poor maynever
floydiots cry all night long
Floyd can not beat Manny easily. Manny is not Marquez. Marquez is counter puncher and inside fighter. Mayweather is defensive and counter puncher. Marquez and Floyd fight was mismatch. Floyd has longer arms than Marquez. Marquez only throw the punch from one direction. Marquez can not go inside unless Floyd let him open. That’s why Marquez vs. Floyd match was one of the worst performances of Marquez. Manny is intelligent fighter. He can change his strategy any time if it does not work out but Marquez will fight with same strategy. The bad thing is Marquez’ camp they will tell Marquez every time he backs to his corner “you win the round” even though he lost the round. I don’t know whether Marquez was psychologically need to encourage fighting that way telling lie or he like to hear cheer up from his coach. So Manny will be different opponent for Floyd and Floyd will be different opponent for Manny when they meet in the ring. They both are intelligent fighter. You won’t be boring for watching.
I believe still Manny vs. Floyd fight can happen if Floyd wants to fight Manny. They can pull back the date to June or later date of May.
I have no idea why some of boxing writers and boxing fans do not like the way Pacman fight in Marquez vs. Pacman Trilogy.
I think Manny fight Marquez with perfect strategy. You can not fight Marquez toe-to-toe because Marquez is one of the best counter puncher and uppercut. Manny has strong straight power punch and foots movement. So Manny will hurt a lot if he decided to fight toe-to-toe fight. If you watch their first meeting and then you can see they both hurt badly. Boxing is not about killing, hurting and knockout sport but the sport is also the strategy and skill. Manny throw the punches and moving around. Marquez can not work out how to counter punch back. He did not hurt Manny.
There’s no question about who win the match. Manny is clearly winner. If Marquez seriously think he was winner and then why he does not complain to boxing authority. That’s clearly Marquez conceived he lost the fight.
87 days guys that with good time is about 45 days locked in a gym with his
own food an trainers PLEASE …FLOYD JUST WENT TO CAMP EARLY HE’S
WATCHING FILM OF PACMAN FIGHTS, AN A DOMESTIC VIOLANCE ATTORNEY
COST ABOUT 500 dollars, RELAX CAUSE FLOYD GONE WALK OUT OF THAT
GYM AN BEAT THE BREAKS OFF PACMANS DUMB AZZ
??? It’s a two way split and not three way if you include GBP. by the way, Floyd never stated personally that he want to fight Pacquiao ever since the famous “don’t put words into my mouth” Pacquiao always calling out Floyd for about a month now. Floyd need to respond personally and not thru Ellerbe.
I have no idea why some of boxing writers and boxing fans do not the way Pacman fight in Marquez vs. Pacman Trilogy.

@ focker, why would Floyd pay Arum a percentage, when he pays GBP a flat fee, Arum and Haymon can’t stand each other which is why Schaeffer deals with Arum
By the way, GBP is out of the table, it is between Arum,Haymon, Pacs and Floyd. Toprank is a licensed promoter, Floyd don’t need GBP license to make the fight. more money for Floyd.
Manny want this fight, Floyd need this fight, especially now, Those lawyers depending him are expensive, Josie Harris out of court settlement was expensive, They are richer than him now. Floyd need to fight Manny by June before he run out of money. Quit you ego Floyd and reach out with Arum and Pacs, he might drop the defamation lawsuit if you ask for it.
@Focker
Read my last post…I clearly just stated I would like things in order for this fight next year. And what’s old news? Floyd’s team tried to put this together 3 weeks ago! If one team/side isn’t willing to negotiate the fight then we’ll never see it! Maybe…just maybe Team Mayweather was trying to do exactly that (get the fight scheduled before he went to jail) But it’s never the right time to negotiate Pac’s next opponent when Floyd is available! Watch and listen next week when Arum starts throwing around potential opponents and dates.
@ MbfromPhilly, That’s the old news, we are talking about now, both camps can be blame but we cannot see the fight if we cannot stop blaming each other. do-you-want-to-see-this-fight-or-not, do you!
@Counterpunch
Wouldn’t that be totally disrespectful to the legal community of Las Vegas? Which is probably why Floyd was sentenced to the time he already has? Making plans like he already knows the outcome before its said? As much as I would like things in order for a fight next year; I think Floyd should deal with debt to society….re-establish his family life…then deal with the business of boxing. IMO
@Focker
Len Ellerbe along with Richard Schafer contacted Arum to try and negotiate the fight through ex-federal judge Daniel Weinstein…the judge confirmed that “Top Rank is not interested in pursuing a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. at this time” the judge is probably the most credible individual in the whole scenario…so is he lying on PAC and Arum to? Is Alex Ariza working for Floyd now? Alex confirmed what we already knew “Arum will do anything to prevent Mayweather and Pacquiao from fighting…honestly; has it ever crossed your mind that Arum and Pacquiao are bs’ing?
@focker
I agree with you, buddy, this can all be set up prior to Floyd’s jail time. People will follow it and wait for Floyd to get out. Neither Pac nor Floyd is getting any younger and time is also a loss of skills.
Before the Judge gave her sentence, she talked to Floyd in private and gave him a choice, fight Pacquiao or serve 3 months in jail. Floyd answered without hesitation, I take the jail time your honor. I am not making this up, Ellerbe is my uncle.
@Romeo
Too much opinionated misinformation! What was Pac’s response when called apon by Mayweather? Was it “let’s go”…was it “where do I sign”… Or was it “I wanna fight Marquez first” or “talk to my promoter” or…Bob Arum “Manny needs 6 months to heal his cut”…or “we’re not ready to do anything yet; if we decide we want Mayweather…we’ll contact them”. Do any of those statements sound familiar??? They all came from Pacquiao and Bob Arum! But Mayweather is the problem huh? TOTAL DENIAL!
Defensive gem as they call it. Floyd is ready to go to prison just to protect his 0! Brilliant!
Lol the Pacquiao fanatics are back.
Floyd is SCARED, its very clear
If Floyd really want to fight Pacquiao, he can negotiate with Arum and Manny before Jan. 6, 2012. They can schedule the fight on June 12 to give Floyd enough time for training camp. If Floyd can’t do that, Pacquiao will not wait until he got out from jail to negotiate, time is money. they will find another opponent for June 12, I hope with Tim Bradly and not Marquez. after three fights with Marquez, I am tired of it. two is enough, three is too much, four is unnecessary.
Your take that fight between Pacman vs Money will not happen is consistent with the information from George Peterson as quoted by Scoop Malinowski way back in 2009. That’s quite a long time ago. Interestingly, until now there is a pattern with how Floyd and his Team are orchestrating his career. and it seems that foremost in their agenda is to keep Floyd undefeated by avoiding highly risky fighter. Some are saying Floyd had fought elite fighters but that was early in his career. The turning point for Floyd could be his fight with Oscar. From thereon, they plotted his career path with skillful maneuverings including detour to put him always on top. Which is understadable and I agree that Floyd has a terrific team. But what is good for his pocket is only good for his pocket, less likely for the sport of boxing.
That he called Pacquiao in the run up to Pac’s fight with JMM, was in accordance with the plan. They decided that Floyd should enter a guilty plea. But I think they don’t expect a jail time but some kind of lesser penalty. That’s the twist that hurt their plan. But to my mind such guilty plea was a way out of the fight because despite the less than stellar performance of Pacquiao vs JMM, he is not sure he can win convincingly against Pacquiao.
But in calling out Pacquiao, they made sure to the boxing world that he is indeed willing to fight Pacquiao.
So with the same kind of maneuvering and contradictory and open-ended statements, no, the fight won’t happen.
Mayweather can train in jail. the fight can still be pushed true. Or he can fight as a prisoner.
