Salido stops Haya; Paez Jr. defeats Omar Chavez; Mijares destroys Valdez

By Jim Dower: In a fight that almost turned out to be a shocker, WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (37-11-1, 24 KO’s) survived a scare against Filipino Weng Haya (15-5, 8 KO’s) in an eight round TKO on Saturday night at the Palengue de la Feria in Ciudad, Obregon, Sonora, Mexico.

Haya, only 22, put Salido down twice in the fight, once in the 3rd round and another time in the 4th. Salido got up off the deck each time and made adjustments to compensate for the speed and power of Haya and came back and halted him in the 8th.

In other action on the card, former WBC super flyweight champion Christian Mijares (44-6-2, 20 KO’s) stopped Alejandro Valzez (25-7-2, 19 KO’s) in the 3rd round.

Omar Chavez (27-1-1, 20 KO’s) lost a 10 round majority decision to Jorge Paez Jr. (30-4-1, 18 KO’s) in somewhat of a shocker. The final judges’ scores were 99-93m 99-93 and 95-95.
