But now Ring Magazine conducted a poll for its readers asking what was ‘the robbery of the year for 2011,’ and the number #1 choice was the Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez III bout with 43 percent of the boxing fans picking it as the worst robbery of the year. The 2nd place vote was the Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara fight which accumulated 32 percent of the photos.

This is bad for Pacquiao and his loving boxing fans because they saw it as a clear cut winner, while many boxing fans saw it as another black eye for boxing. I personally scored the fight 116-112 for Marquez, and no way did I see Pacquiao coming close to winning this fight. The judges scored it 115-113, 114-114 and 116-112 for Pacquiao.

It shows you how judges sometimes score fights that run counter to the larger public’s opinion. In this case, the fight outcome has largely been ignored by fans, which see it a clear cut loss for Pacquiao. It’s an empty win due to fans seeing it as a robbery and not a real win.

However, despite the win being seen as a tainted one by boxing fans, Pacquiao may move on and face another opponent in his next fight rather than giving Marquez a rematch. How he could be satisfied with this win is beyond me.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum will talk with him in early 2012 and two of the choices for Pacquiao’s next fight are Miguel Cotto and Timothy Bradley.

The 38-year-old Marquez may have to wait a little longer to get his rematch if he’s to get one at all. He waited three years to get a rematch after the last time he fought Pacquiao in 2008. Like in the last fight, Marquez lost a controversial 12 round decision in a fight that many boxing fans including this writer saw him winning.

If he has to wait another three years to get another rematch, Marquez will be 41. I think it’s safe to say Pacquiao would finally beat him without controversy by then.
