Peterson’s trainer says they’re not going to be bullied into a rematch with Khan

Image: Peterson's trainer says they're not going to be bullied into a rematch with KhanBy William Mackay: Now that Lamont Peterson has unseated Amir Khan and taken his two titles, he and his trainer Barry Hunter are going to be looking to get the best possible deal for their next fight.

That could be Khan or a fight against WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, a fighter who Peterson has unfinished business with after losing as lopsided 12 round decision to him in 2009.

Hunter said in an interview with the Daily Star “If it doesn’t make sense to me or Lamont; I don’t care what happens. I’m not going to let nobody bully us. I had to do what is best and right for Lamont. Lamont said it best: A rematch has to make business sense.”

It’s very likely that the most money by far that can be made for Peterson is a rematch with Khan. If Peterson doesn’t know that by know he soon will after finding out how much money he can get in a fight against Bradley. Khan brings in big numbers, as well as fans.

It still might be better for Peterson to fight someone else rather than Khan because in a rematch, Khan will likely be able to foul as much as he wants without anyone controlling him. Since Khan has no clue how to fight on the inside, he uses fouling to keep his opponents from getting in close by shoving, holding, pushing down on their heads and putting them in headlocks. When Khan is at full power using these fouls, he’s hard to beat if a referee isn’t taking points from him. Warnings are useless as we saw last Saturday. Khan simply ignores the warnings, and continues to foul. He even continues fouling after losing points. I guess it will take something special to finally get him to stop, perhaps a disqualification, which I can’t see happening.

The only real issue to watch out for in a rematch with Khan is the judges and the referee. Peterson needs a referee that will allow him to fight on the inside and not step in and break the action up. Believe it or not, there are more than a few referees out there that get in the way of fighters when they’re working in tight and trying to fight.

These referees will break up the action continually, and they’re a godsend for a fighter like Khan, who doesn’t have any skills on the inside. Peterson needs to watch for this, as well as the judges.

I think he’ll probably be stuck with whoever is chosen whether he’s happy with them or not. But that’s pretty much where he’ll win or lose the rematch with Khan. You get a referee that stops Peterson from working, then it’ll be an easy fight for Khan.

In addition to that, if a referee allows Khan to push off, shove Peterson’s head down, hold & hit and put him in headlocks all night without being penalized, then Peterson will have little chance to win other than by knockout.

In pretty much all of Khan’s fights, he’s been able to get away with fouling and the problem seems to have gotten worse recently with his opposition getting better. He doesn’t foul much against lesser threats like Paul McCloskey, but against Marcos Maidana, Zab Judah and Peterson, Khan fouled a lot in those fights.
