Lamont Peterson possible Pacquiao opponent

by John F. McKenna (McJack): New WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) is being considered as a possible opponent for pound for pound king WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s).

Now that “Pacman’s” hoped for Mega fight with undefeated WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) has fallen through due to Floyd’s incarceration other options are being explored.

Even though Peterson’s victory over former WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) was controversial Peterson impressed a lot of people with his dogged determination. Lamont was given little chance to defeat the much quicker Khan, but he stuck to his game plan and demonstrated that he wanted the win more than Amir did.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach added Peterson’s name to the list of possible opponents for Manny after the fight with Mayweather fell through. Other possible opponents are Miguel Cotto and Timothy Bradley. There has also been some talk of matching up Pacquiao with WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s) for a 4th time. Pacquiao won a highly controversial decision over Marquez on November 12.

It is thought by many however that another Pacquiao – Marquez fight would be pointless. The thinking is that a 4th fight would have similar results as the first 3 which all ended controversially with no clear cut winner. It also appears that the law of diminishing returns applies to Pacquiao and Marquez. Because of Marquez’ ability to time Pacquiao and his counter punching skills, each succeeding fight is less exciting than the one which preceded it. For that reason many boxing fans do not want to see a 4th fight between the two.

Peterson at 5’9” would have a decided height advantage over the 5’6” Pacquiao. In addition Peterson weighed 155 pounds when he entered the ring against Khan. Lamont also demonstrated against Amir that physically he is a very strong fighter on the inside.
Lamont’s strength was problematic for Khan later in the fight. It was clear that Khan underestimated Peterson and he wound up paying for it.

The newly resurgent WBA Super light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) was thrust back into mix of potential opponents for Pacquiao when he TKO’d Antonio Margarito on December 3.

More than likely a decision will be made after the holidays as to who Manny’s next opponent will be when Top Rank CEO Bob Arum and Pacquiao confer in January.

If this fight happens, it will be good and competitive as both of them are come-forward boxer styles. Peterson has some advantaged in inside but Manny will command the outside. BUT, what i like most about this is that Lamont had shown he can be a good, mild mannered, and highly competitive champion even though he is not on the elite level yet. Also, if their personal history is to be put onto consideration, as both being homeless during their young age and fought their way up for an honest living. Why not give Lamont a good payday? After all, he has a championship belt to prove his qualification, even though Pacquiao does not need his belt. If this fight happens and goes to PPV? I for damn sure will buy.

  • Stevo says:

LOL USA you are so right the head injury is a headache caused by Mayweather who unfortunately is headed to prison. Now all of a sudden they are ready to fight.

  • Pacphobia says:

Lamont please…use ur knowledge! Defend ur IBF-WBA belts to Manny! That’s the only “WAY” to get Pacman’s attention. Lamont I guarantee you that 100%!!! Forget Khan rematch [non-sense] Gets?

  • Tony D says:

he needs to fight khan in a rematch. khan was robbed by that crooked ref. next fight has to be in atlantic city or vegas. that ref should be banned from boxing

  • Dom says:

How does Peterson qualify to fight Pacquiao?
    Peterson won his last fight
    Peterson has a jab
    Peterson moves well

Pacquiao does’nt fight this kind of fighter ever!

Heavy G. I agree JMM will be remembered as such but not as the number one or two pound for champ. Ten yrs from now when you ask a fan who was p4p champ at certain years? Names such as Robinson, Ali, De La Hoya, Sweat Pea, Chavez, Jones jr. Mayweather, Pacqiou to name a few will come up. Sorry he will never attain that position until he beat either one of the two best p4p champs. Otherwise he’ll be remembered as the guy who fought close fights with Pacman and who was outclassed by Mayweather. No other fight that is interesting for him out there unless for some unknown reason he move up and knock out Martinez. Dinamita is the best and we are blessed to live to see him fight. What a technician!!

  • TsipaR7 says:

Heavy G: Thanks for your responds! I know JMM is rich enough to buy Tijuana and well known by true boxing fans in Mexico and all over the world. Regardless of how many compliments he gets from fans; I’m sure he would like to be remembered as the best p4p. If he retires today he will be remembered as a great counter puncher, and an intelligent fighter but not the number one pound for pound champ. He is 38 yrs old and I wonder if he’ll ever get a chance to be number one, the man that is considered by many as the best is not planning on fighting him a 4th time. Mayweather outclassed him already, no point for a rematch. Other fights will not be as meaningful as fighting Floyd or the congressman. Who do you think he should fight next other than Pacman? I bet he won’t make the same money as he would fighting one of the two pound for pound champs.

  • martin says:

what a f.. joke is bob arum!!! peterson packiao?? wtf?? and nonito donaire vs vasquez??? dont pay top rank figths guys thats the only solution !! if idiots keep payin ppv figths from top rank why stop the miss matches????

  • Mike says:

Pacquiao wasn’t gonna fight Floyd anyway Floyd going to jail just let him off the hook, so yeah he’ll try to fight a smaller man but whats funny is Lamont Peterson will beat him like he did Khan because he’s a better boxer all he has to work on is his stamina and he will out box Pacquiao

  • atlas says:

pacquiao is the king of boxing right now. he can chose and dictate what he wants. oh by the way pacquiao the lawmaker vs floyd the lawbreaker can wait but there’s a great chance floyd will be involved in a gang fight inside the prison, he will do evrything to prolong his prison sentence until pacquiao has retired lol

  • BUGAN says:

    that wud be a good tune-up bout b4 a mayweather fight…

  • JohnnyRam says:

Hahaha, If Pacquiao fights Peterson or any other fighter in May this coming year Arum would have exposed is fear of Pac-man losing and would also confirms his belief that mayweather would win. I like Floyd has the really good boxer that he is, but this is just sad that the hype of pacquiao is fake, if he’s not willing to take on a risky fighter cause of Arum. He wants to retire but with what type of legacy. The fighters hes beat since have been either too old or damaged beyond repair. Take a look at the fights and the age of some fighters or what they’ve been through. Perfect timing by a sleazy promoter, and blind fans.

  • The Truth says:

Peterson didn’t even win against Khan, so he shouldn’t face Pacquiao. His team better pick his fights carefully, otherwise he’ll lose them titles straight away.

  • Anonymous says:

Guess that scratch healed pretty quick.

    lmao.

  • BoxingFan says:

Manny would KO Peterson within 3 rounds!

  • the real boxing fan says:

    it will be pacquiao-cotto 2!

  • the real boxing fan says:

it’ll be pacquiao-cotto 2!it will be huge at 152 lbs!specifically for 9 division titles for pacquiao!

  • the real boxing fan says:

i think it will be pacquiao-cotto 2!fighting at superwelterweight for 9th division title is huge for pacquiao!cotto will certaintly ask for 152lbs cacthweight!
it’ll be huge fight!big money too.

  • Anti hater phaser says:

Manny has no inside game. Anytime you see Manny taking punishment guys are up close. If you think for one second that Lamont would get blown out, you cant be a fan of boxing. Roach fighters arent trained in inside fighting. Lamont has what it takes to beat Manny. An all out body attack and good chin. Arum is behind the 8 ball. He doesnt have a guy who is new on the scene with much fan fare. Which means he will have to go outside his stable. Which means he couldnt buy Lamont. Just like he bought Mosley, Marquez, Clottey, Cotto and Bradley. Pay attention people. The only coward in this game is Bob Arum.

  • richard 2sharp mccombs says:

LAMONT IS READY FOR WHO EVER HE FACE HE HAS EXPERIENCE AND HIS TEAM IS SOLID AT THIS POINT HE IS UNSTOPPABLE.

  • polo says:

nice soft puncher to take on. Why not face the man who beat him bradley??????? Never will happen anyway lamond is the kind of guy who will not let himself be shortchanged hard negotiator. Remember he is self promoted.

  • IBM says:

Peterson wont be able to keep up with Pac Man speed. TKO 9 round

  • APBrooklyn says:

Lamont would get KO’d…not quite ready for manny…lamont should fight maidana or berto ortiz first before manny.

  • Pac-Kill says:

    Fight fans,

Be patient, as we don’t even know who Manny Pacquiao will fight next. TO fight Manny Pacquiao is a dream come true by making millions in one night, whether win or lose.

  • Pac-Kill says:

Having the opportunity to fight the Great Manny Pacquiao is like you are winning the multimillion dollar lottery.

  • Pac-Kill says:

    @seriously,

You are right, Peterson is NOT ready for the MAN, the one and only MANNY PACQUIAO. I gave Peterson credit for being an underdog and controversially beat Khan, but he will be knocked out by the Pacman.

PACQUIAO is the where the MONEY is so everyone wants a piece of his wealth.

  • Heavy G says:

    @ TsipaR7

If you mean JMM, why feel sorry for a bazillionaire? The man is worshipped in Mexico, has more money than he will ever spend and is a shoo-in for the HOF. In boxing circles he is recognized as an all-time great counterpunching tactician. All three of his matches with Pac (another all time great) were razor-thin decisions, even too close to call. His loss to John was also extremely close.

No matter what he does from this point forward, his greatness is already established.

  • FREE MAYWEATHER says:

PACMAN WILL TAKE THIS FIGHT EASY MONEY

  • Pac-Kill says:

    @damtIT,

As we have seen recently, Khan wanted to fight Pacquiao by saying many bad things about Team Pacquiao and Pacquiao himself. However, as humble and friendly as Pacquiao, he didn’t say any words against Khan because he still wanted to be a good friend with Khan.

Having lost to Peterson, I think Khan will have to fight a “good fight” next in order to open the eyes of the boxing world.

  • Seriously... says:

Peterson beats a lousy fighter like Khan, and suddenly he has a chance against Pacquiao? Peterson should ask for a rematch against Bradley or fight someone like Maidana, even Morales. He is still not ready for the big boys.

  • Pac-Kill says:

If this fight happens, Pacquiao is going to KNOCK PETERSON OUT. After this fight, floyd will be even more scared with a billion excuses.

  • F4TH3R PR says:

Now that his fight with Floyd is in halt, I would like to see Pacquiao, in order of preference, against:
    1. Sergio @ 150-154
    2. Marquez @ 140
    3. Cotto @ 154
    4. Bradley @ 147
    5. Alvarez @ 154
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
    1000000. Peterson @ 140

I mean, why the hell does Pacquiao want to fight Peterson? It doesn’t make sense. If he only has few fights left in his bag, make them count!

  • mannyfresh2oh9 says:

pacquiao is a joke, that’s why johnnyram

however, i’d love to be proven wrong with my prediction of a blowout win for pacquiao if he does choose to fight lamont.

me being wrong about the marquez fight (i guess KO by round 6 for pacquiao) was a MORE than pleasant surprise. i’d like much of the same surprise should these 2 fight. i doubt it’ll happen though

  • JohnnyRam says:

This fight is an easy fight for Pacquiao, nothing against Lamont Peterson, but he also won controversially. Pacquiao will show more power than Amir Kahn. Lamont will get knocked out in this fight. This is not a good fight to make. This is a safe one with a predictable outcome unfortunetly. I’d hate to say it but pacquiao is not giving what the fans want, like he says he wants to do.

  • TsipaR7 says:

For some reason I feel sorry for Marguez. Where does he go from here on?
