Pacquiao – Mayweather: Comedy story

By Robert Elmore: Bob Arum and Michael Koncz sit before a bunch of reporters as they eagerly wait to here from Arum. He slightly opens his mouth. Their pens rise up. “Manny Pacquiao, currently number one pound for pound will be fighting Floyd Mayweather on June 9th 2012 in Las Vegas”, Arum says slyly.

The reporters rush toward the door nearly knocking each other over. One reporter stops. “Hey wait a minute”, he says. That’s the same date Manny is fighting Marquez. How could he possibly fight two fighters at once”? And didn’t you say that the cut on Manny’s head wouldn’t be healed in time for May 5th? And then you said Mayweather has court dates coming up that could lead to trail and that could stop the fight from happening? So which one is it? Arum and Koncz look at each other as if the other has the answer. “SECURITY”!!! Officers burst in. Get that man outta here right now and show him off the premises. You’ll never work in this town again”. Arum straightens his jacket and reseats himself. “Anybody else with a comment”? The reporters look around not saying a word. “Good. Now go run that story”.

Just then Manny walks in as the reporters exit. “Who were those guys and why was security roughing up that one guy up”? Manny asked as he sat down. “Those guys were nobody and that guy tried to steal from me”, Arum quickly answered. Listen, I’ve got some bad news and good news. The bad news is Mayweather doesn’t want the fight. But we already have options. Arum snaps his fingers and Koncz hands him a sheet of paper. Tim Bradley, Miguel Cotto, and Juan Manuel Marquez”. “Those fight can really sale Manny and we can make a fortune”, Koncz says as he puts his arm around Manny. I can see it now. “Manny vs. Cotto 2; Cotto’s Revenge. Or how about Manny vs. Marquez in THE GRUDGE MATCH”. The expression on Manny’s face drops.

“I invited all those people to my dinner and told them the fight was going to happen and now this”, Manny said. How do you know Mayweather doesn’t want the fight? It’s all in the papers written by specific reporters each time that negotiations are going on….” Koncz goes in his briefcase and pulls out the pictures of him and Mayweather. “I went to Vegas to talk about a fight and well…..he simply doesn’t want it”, Koncz said while handing Manny the pictures. See we even took pictures”. Manny shakes his head and angrily hands the pictures back to Koncz. “Something’s not right here. I want the fight and Mayweather wants the fight. . But somehow there seems to be a roadblock standing in the way”. Arum pours some chloroform on a towel and walks over to the Pilipino star. And quite frankly, the only roadblock I see holding this fight up is…….” Arum puts the towel over Manny’s face and gently lowers him to the floor.

Koncz jumps out his seat. “Was that really necessary Bob”? Knocz asked pacing back and forth. Look at that. How are we going to explain that to Jinky”? “I had to. He knows too much”, Arum said. But we can use this time to conjure another headline. Newsflash. Pacquiao passes out in Top Rank office due to heat exhaustion. Won’t be able to fight Mayweather until…” Arum briefly stops to do some calculations. “If we fight Marquez in April 2012, then that leaves the Bradley fight in November. Then we can fight Cotto in May of 2013”. Arum continues his previous thought. Won’t be able to fight Mayweather until November 2013. Text that to those reporters and tell em to get busy on that”. Koncz makes his way to the door. “What about Manny”? he asked. We can’t just leave him here”. He’ll be alright. Just do what I told you”.

FT: While I’m making light of the situation, it’s become comical that a hand full of reporters are still drinking Arums milkshake. Not one journalist has yet to confront Arum on the many different excuses he has given why the fight hasn’t happen. The only reason I believe that Manny hasn’t demanded the mega fight is because of his contract with Top Rank. This fight would have been happened if he was independent. And while I’m thinking about it. What has become of those investors?
