Image: Marco Huck vs. Alexander Povetkin on February 25th in GermanyBy Jim Dower: After making his first defense of his title against 42-year-old No.14 ranked Cedric Boswell, WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KO’s) will make his next title defense against WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KO’s) on February 25th in Stuttgart, Germany, according to news from Dan Rafael.

How Povetkin can get away with taking two optional defenses in a row is beyond me, as Boswell was ranked near the bottom of the World Boxing Association rankings, and Huck isn’t even ranked in the heavyweight division.

This still isn’t a bad fight, as the #1 contender is 38-year-old Hasim Rahman and Huck is arguably a lot more interesting opponent even though Huck is kind of a primitive fighter with only limited boxing skills and size. However, Huck, 6’1 ½” is roughly the same size as the 6’2” Povetkin.

Huck weighs in right at the cruiserweight limit of 200lbs for his fights at the cruiserweight level, but after rehydrating, Huck looks o be at least 210. As such, he’s not going to be that much smaller than Povetkin, who usually weighs in the neighborhood of 228lbs for his fights.

Where Huck may have problems with is Povetkin’s excellent chin, better inside fighting skills and superior work rate. Povetkin will likely try to walk Huck down and force him to trade. Huck used to brawl the entire time and wear down late, but now he boxes and mixes his attacks. Povetkin is going to have to really put a lot of pressure on Huck, because he’s probably not as powerful as Huck and not in his class in terms of offensive ability.

Povtkin has to put pressure and wear Huck down if he plans on winning. Huck picked the right heavyweight champion because Povetkin is beatable even against a limited cruiserweight like Huck. I see this as a toss fight.
