Image: Khan needs to find a better way to deal with Peterson's pressure rather than shoving and pushing down on his headBy William Mackay: I find it hilarious that Amir Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer thinks he’s got a good case to have Khan’s loss to Lamont Peterson overturned. The argument that Schaefer and Khan have for the fight being overturned is that Khan shouldn’t have been docked points for pushing off on Peterson, and that Peterson should have had points taken off for coming in with his head.

I just sat down and watched fight again and I can’t see Peterson coming in with his head at all. Compared to some inside fighters that come in hard and often make contact with their heads, Peterson was tame, as he stood mostly around eye level to Khan when throwing his body punches.

What I did notice was that Khan couldn’t handle the body shots and looked panicky. This was the first time in Khan’s career that he had ever faced a real genuine body puncher and he didn’t look ready all. Khan frequently reached out when Peterson was on the outside, not necessarily on the inside, and either pushed him hard or grabbed his head and shoved it down.

It’s pretty clear that Khan needs to learn how to handle pressure from fighters in a different way rather than pushing them and pulling down on their heads 24/7. This wasn’t the first fight Khan did the fouling. He did in the Marcos Maidana and the Zab Judah bouts. Neither of those guys were seriously coming at Khan looking to throw to the body, yet Khan was still shoving them away and/or grabbing them around the head and pulling them down. He just doesn’t seem to have a better way of defending than shoving it seems.

It’s the grabbing, shoving or he’s running. He rarely stands and tries to block shots and fire off exchanges. We saw him cover up a bunch of times against Peterson, but he looked like a sparring partner when he was doing that and it was totally useless because Peterson went right after Khan’s body each time he did this.
