Image: Khan hints that he would beat Juan Manuel MarquezBy William Mackay: It was funny reading some of the comments from IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan in his latest conference call transcript. I had thought in the past that Khan had a runaway ego that was out of line with his existing talent, but I didn’t know how bad he was until today.

Khan, speaking about himself in the third person, basically hinted that Juan Manuel Marquez ducked fighting him and then hinted that he would beat Marquez.

Here’s what Khan said “We also offered a fight to Marquez a long time ago and he refuse that fight. I think styles make fights, and I think with my style you can put Marquez and put Amir, I think we all know what the decision will be.”

Yes, we do know what the decision would be, Khan would lose. We just saw Marquez beat Manny Pacquiao but not get the decision. So is Khan saying he’s better than Pacquiao? It sure seems like it. For a fighter that lost to Breidis Prescott and had to be saved in order to get past Marcos Maidana, he really thinks highly of himself.

I have no doubts in my mind that Khan would have been knocked against Maidana if a different referee was working that fight instead of Joe Cortez. He was pulling Maidana off Khan during crucial moments in the last three rounds when Khan was badly hurt. When he was pulling Maidana off of Khan, he was standing in between them like a schoolyard teacher keeping a bully away from a victim. I have an asterisk next to that so-called win for Khan because I don’t think he earned it.

Marquez would do a number on Khan and make him look real bad with his accurate punching. It wouldn’t matter what kind of tricks Khan tried in that fight – shoving, holding and hitting, pulling down on the back of the neck of his opponent – it wouldn’t work. Marquez would light Khan up and stop him.

Khan continues “We took Zab Judah, who also was another threat in the division, and we took him out. That’s the reason they’ve put me to number one in the world because they call me the best fighter in the division.”
Sick. Let’s be real here, Judah was beaten by Lucas Matthyse right before the Khan fight. Judah got the decision over Matthyse, but he lost that fight. Judah was an old fighter, and Khan beat a guy who seen better days.

So a victory of Judah makes Khan the best in the division? What a joke! How about fighting Matthyse, Prescott, Maidana with a different referee, and then Bradley? Khan isn’t best fighter in the division because he hasn’t beaten everyone yet. The Maidana win was tainted, Prescott knocked him out, and Khan hasn’t fought Matthysse, Mike Alvarado or Bradley. Therefore he’s not number #1, he’s just another fighter who still needs to prove himself.
