Image: Khan: Froch needs to rough Ward upBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan looked like a traumatized person on Sky Sports’ Ringside the other day; no doubt still feeling the emotional pain of being beaten by Lamont Peterson and having a hard time figuring out what went wrong. Khan was asked his thoughts on Saturday’s battle between Carl Froch and Andre Ward, and said he thinks Froch is going to have problems with Ward’s hand speed and accuracy.

Although Khan didn’t come right out and say he’s picking Ward to win this fight, you got the general impression that’s who Khan sees winning that fight. Khan almost sounded like he admires Ward when speaking of his speed and boxing skills. If Khan had just a smidgen of Ward’s amazing skills last Saturday night, all of his current problems would be over.

He would have won easily, because he would have known how to fight Peterson on the inside instead of looking like a clueless amateur and shoving & holding Peterson all night. If I was Khan, I’d study Ward’s fight with Froch with great detail and watch it over and over again so that I could learn how to fight inside instead of fouling.

Khan said “Carl needs to take him [Ward] out of his game plan and rough him up.”

In other words, Froch needs to follow the same game plan that he used in his controversial win over Andre Dirrell in 2009. Froch rabbit punched, held and hit, and body slammed his way to a 12 round decision. The referee working the fight took a complete hands off approach and let Froch foul Dirrell at will. Unfortunately, those kinds of referees are rare because most of them take points off from a fighter that throws continuous rabbit punches and holds & hits.

And they certainly take points off for fighters that body slam. I think if Froch follows Khan’s game plan he will surely lose and will likely lose a lot of points and get disqualified. I think Froch can get away with a little roughhouse tactics but he can’t take it to the extreme that he did in the Dirrell fight. He looked like an MMA fighter in that bout and really should have been disqualified by the 6th had the referee been awake. Khan is right about Ward’s speed. It’s way too good for Froch, and he’s going to have to cycle through his plan A, B, C, D and E to try and figure out something that actually works.
