Image: Kell Brook needs to impress against Galarza on SaturdayBy Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (25-0, 17 KO’s) faces Luis Galarza (17-2, 13 KO’s) in what Brook and his promoter hopes to be an easy fight on the undercard of the Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch Super Six tournament bout at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Brook, ranked #2 by the WBO, is looking to show off his skills to American boxing fans in hope that he can accomplish what fellow Brit Amir Khan has partially achieved in winning over a sizable fan base. Brook and his promoters are hoping he can become a huge pay per view star and can take on the big names like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

Thus far Brook has been kept under wraps for the most part during his seven year pro career. It’s hard to imagine a fighter having fought seven years and still not ever having faced a real quality opponent before but that’s the case for Brook. He’s been matched mostly against 3rd tier opposition until recently when he was put in with contender Rafael Jackiewicz and 40-year-old Lovemore N’dou.

Although neither of those fighters are going to be winning any titles anytime soon, it did present to be a huge step up for Brook in that he was finally facing someone with a pulse instead of the usual stiff that he’d been matched against. On Saturday, Brook takes a backwards step in taking on Galarza. Brook’s management appear to be wanting to make sure that he looks good, so they’re increasing their chances by matching him soft again. Brook should win and hopefully move on to better opposition next year.

Brook doesn’t have the longest reach and his power isn’t in the class of the better fighters at welterweight. And his speed, while okay, isn’t as good as some of the better fighters such as Andre Berto, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pacquiao and Victor Ortiz.
