Image: Is Arum doing Cotto a favor by offering him Chavez Jr?By Eric Thomas: It’s no secret that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum would like to match his two fighters WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. up against each other if they’re open to the fight.

Chavez Jr. is good with it, but is this a good fight for Cotto? Arum made it seem as if Chavez Jr. was a treat being offered to the winner of the Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito bout recently. Now that Cotto was won the fight, he has the option of taking the Chavez Jr. bout next if he wants it.

Cotto’s contract with Top Rank is up, and Arum obviously would like to keep within the flock. However, you have to wonder whether Arum matching Cotto up against Chavez Jr. is a move made to keep Cotto with Top Rank and help his career or if this is one where Arum is using Cotto to make Chavez Jr. a bigger star.

Arum must know be will come out on top in that fight. If the bout take place a year or two ago, I think you’d have to pick Cotto by knockout. He was a lot more advanced that Chavez Jr. was back then. However, Chavez Jr. has greatly improved recently and he’s matured as a fighter and as an adult. He’s a huge fighter and is naturally very strong. He walks around at 180+, and you got to figure that he would have a big weight advantage over Cotto if they were to fight.

Arum might be throwing Cotto to the polar bears if he puts him in with Chavez Jr, and I really don’t think this is a good fight for Cotto. Chavez Jr. isn’t painfully slow like Margarito and is a lot more solidly built. Cotto would have serious problems against Chavez Jr. and I don’t think Arum is doing Cotto any favors by talking about matching him against Chavez.
