Image: Helenius defeats Chisora in robbery in HelsinkiBy Sean McDaniel: In a fight result that really makes you shake your head, unbeaten Robert Helenius (17-0, 11 KO’s), fighting in front of his home crowd, defeated Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) by a controversial 12 round split decision on Saturday night at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. The final judges’ scores were 115-113 for Helenius, 115-113 for Chisora, 115-113 for Helenius.

Chisora kept Helenius pinned to the ropes for much of the fight, banging him to the head and body and dodging his weak jabs and counter shots with excellent head movement. Helenius seemed to wear down under Chisora’s unrelenting body attack in the later rounds and you could see Chisora was in full control of the fight. Chisora badly outworked and out-landed the taller Helenius, but unfortunately found himself on the receiving end of a disappointing decision. You knew that Chisora would likely have to knock Helenius to win the fight going in, but it’s too he couldn’t have been given a decision in this one case. This kind of thing is bad for boxing, although I suppose Helenius’ fans will take the win any way they can get it.

Helenius proved that he’s not ready for the Klitschko brothers in this fight, and even if one of the brothers were willing to travel and fight in front of Helenius’ home crowd in Helsinki, he would be completely taken apart by either of the Klitschkos. Helenius needs major work before he’s even close to being ready for them. Right now, I think Tyson Fury and David Price would destroy Helenius.
