Image: Froch: Ward is in deep, deep water tonightBy Scott Gilfoid: As the fight ticks closer, Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) is like a man possessed to beat WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) tonight to take his title and capture Showtime’s Super Six tournament trophy. Can Froch accomplish this? Probably not unless he raises his game a couple of levels and fights a lot better than he’s shown in the Super Six tournament.

Despite coming into tonight’s fight with a 3-1 record in tournament action, Froch has been underwhelming to say the least. A first round win over Andre Dirrell that looked more like a loss; a defeat in his second fight against an aging Mikkel Kessler, a win over an undersized, under-skilled Arthur Abraham, and then finally a win over 43-year-old Glen Johnson. As you can see, excluding the Dirrell fight where Froch appeared to lose, he really hasn’t beaten anyone dangerous. He’s beaten limited fighters and now he’s about to face the best fighter in the tournament.

Froch said to Sky Sports News “Andre Ward is in with the best super middleweight in the planet. I’m bigger, stronger, use more angles; He’s in deep, deep water. I’ll make sure of something tonight. I’ll leave everything in the ring.”

I beg to differ about Froch being the best fighter in the division. That has yet to be determined and he may in fact be more like someone further down in the pack. I mean already lost to Kessler, and got a gift decision while fighting at home against Dirrell. Froch hasn’t fought Sakio Bika, Lucian Bute, Kelly Pavlik, Peter Quillin, Ward or Anthony Dirrell yet. I can see Froch losing to all of those guys or at the minimum two or three.

Froch’s angles he shows tonight against Ward won’t be unexpected. Ward also throws punches from weird angles and is always ready for incoming shots. He’ll be ready for Froch’s shots you can count on that.
