Froch more interested in facing Kessler than Bute

Image: Froch more interested in facing Kessler than ButeBy Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch appears to be more interested in facing Mikkel Kessler next rather than an arguably much more dangerous fight against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.

In an interview in English news, Froch said “A rematch with Mikkel Kessler in the City Ground in Nottingham [in England] would be absolutely phenomenal, even if there’s no world titles on the line. That would be a big fight. We’ve still got that fight [Lucian Bute] there if we want it. We’re currently in negotiations. If we get that fight we may have to go to Canada, and he may have to come to England. But the big one for me is to go back to the City Grounds for a rematch with Kessler.”

There it is. Froch is saying he prefers the Kessler rematch to the Bute fight. Now why is it that Froch would rather fight Kessler than Bute? Kessler was already beat by Ward and Joe Calzaghe and looks completely beatable.

As for Froch wanting Kessler to come down to Nottingham for a fight, I don’t see that happening in a million years. Kessler isn’t crazy enough to travel all the way to Nottingham and risk finding himself getting the same treatment that Andre Dirrell did when he fought Froch in Nottingham. Dirrell dominated Froch in every department but found himself losing by a 12 round split decision. Kessler might agree to fight Froch but only if the fight takes place in Denmark or a neutral venue.

If Froch really wants the Kessler fight next then he better be prepared to take a long vacation from ring because Kessler is scheduled to fight WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz in April next year, and he won’t be able to fight Froch until after the summer. Froch just needs to bite down on his gum piece and take the fight with Bute and quit yakking about wanting to fight Kessler. It’s not going to happen anytime soon, so he needs to pipe down and live in the real world.

I think Froch is starting to have second thoughts about the wisdom of him facing Bute, probably because he suspects he might lose. Yeah, I think Froch would and if my promoter told me to fight Bute, I wouldn’t do it if I were Froch. Let Ward take care of Bute first and soften him up, but not Froch. With his hit and run style of fighting, Bute is all wrong for Froch. If Froch thought he had a tough time with Ward’s style just wait until he tries fighting Bute. He’s a lot harder to hit with his punch and retreat fighting style.
