McKenna (McJack): It is kind of disturbing how many people are gloating over the misfortune that has befallen World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s). There have been numerous articles written by boxing writers since Floyd was sentenced in Las Vegas last week to 90 days in jail in the Clark County Detention Center.
Some of the articles were written by writers who could not contain their glee that Mayweather had finally received his comeuppance.
This writer is by no means defending Mr. Mayweather’s behavior which brought him the jail time. Floyd was able to work out a plea deal with prosecutors which removed the possibility of him being convicted of a felony. No one wants to see domestic violence against a woman in any form. In Mayweather’s case the charges were brought against him by the mother of his three children.
Allegedly Floyd also threatened his children. But the manner in which the story has been reported leaves one to ponder whether the writers of those stories were more interested in telling everyone what a bad guy Floyd is rather than the plight of Josie Harris or the children involved in the case.
There is no question that the case has brought some well deserved negativity to Mayweahter. It is clear that when the judge sentenced Floyd to jail she wanted to make a point of getting his attention. The fact that Mayweather was able to afford expensive high profile attorneys may have reduced his jail time but could not keep him out of jail altogether.
In many of the articles written on the subject, it seems that the only thing that was important was that the Mega fight between Mayweather and WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao would be delayed. Not a word about the well being of Josie Harris or her three children.
Even in bad situations there are upsides. It is hopeful that Floyd uses his time away as a time to reflect. It is not a time to gloat or for anybody to preach at Mayweather. Hopefully at this time of the year Floyd can take time to reflect about what is really important in life. Floyd Mayweather Jr. has another side of him that not a lot of media types have seen. Hopefully that side of him comes to the forefront in 2012.
