Image: Chisora won't last long against VitaliBy Scott Gilfoid: With the news that Britain’s Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) will be the next opponent for WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) on February 18th next year, all you can think of is this is another mismatch for Vitali like the many that have come before.

Vitali announced earlier today in the German news publication BILD that he plans on facing Chisora next instead of David Haye. Vitali was impressed with Chisora’s performance in losing a controversial 12 round decision to Robert Helenius. Vitali, like a lot of people, saw Chisora as the winner of that fight. But Chisora beating Helenius, who is really a rather limited heavyweight, is quite different from Chisora beating the 6’7” Vitali.

Chisora had it easy with Helenius because that guy not only can’t punch with his left hand, but he also proved to be painfully slow and a stationary target. Vitali may not be any faster than Helenius in terms of hand speed, but he’s got much better power in either hand. You can’t fault Chisora for taking this fight because it is for the world title, but Chisora really has little chance here.

Chisora’s best opportunity to capture a world title will come after Vitali retires in a year or two. Even then, it’s still a long shot for Chisora to come in and pick up a title due to his limited size. He was beaten soundly by Tyson Fury earlier this year, and while you can use his poor conditioning as part of the reason for that loss, it’s not the whole reason. Fury beat Chisora because of his size. And Vitali is going to do the same thing next February. Chisora will find out how much better Vitali is compared to Helenius and he’s going to be in for a shock at the levels between them.
