Chavez-Rubio: Julio to taste defeat for the first time

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO’s) has been blessed with being the son of a boxing legend in father Julio Cesar Chavez. Instead of having to toil away in near obscurity and claw his way to the top like Sergio Martinez, Chavez Jr. has been helped along his path with huge crowds flocking to see him fight mostly B and C opposition and high ratings on HBO.

Chavez Jr. even had help in getting a clear path to the WBC title by the World Boxing Council stripping Sergio Martinez, the guy that’ widely considered to the best fighter in the middleweight division, and giving it to the light hitting Sebastian Zbik. So instead of Chavez Jr. having to face Martinez for the title, he was able to fight Zbik and win the belt earlier this year.

Since winning the title, Chavez Jr. has used up his voluntary defense by beating fringe contender Peter Manfredo Jr. by a 5h round TKO on November 19th. Chavez Jr. was finally ordered by the World Boxing Council to face his first real threat of his eight year pro career in Sergio Martinez. But instead of facing him, Chavez Jr. asked the WBC to let him fight Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-, 46 Ko’s) in place of Martinez on February 4th, and that fight appears to be happening unless something happens to derail it such as an appeal by Martinez.

It’s still no picnic for Chavez Jr. to be facing the hard punching Rubio because he’s a lot more dangerous than anyone Chavez has ever faced before. You can’t compare the power that Rubio has in both fists to the best fighters that Chavez has faced.

Here are the best guys that Chavez Jr. has fought during his career:

Sebastian Zbik – light puncher who mostly jabs
John Duddy – a fighter with medium power but slow
Peter Manfredo Jr. – medium power but slow
Billy Lyell – light puncher
Matt Vanda light puncher
Jason LeHoullier light puncher
Troy Rowland light puncher

Rubio is a much bigger puncher than any of these guys that Chavez Jr. has fought before and it’s going to take some really special tricks from Chavez’s trainer and/or promoter for him to be able to get through this fight without getting knocked out. Look for weight penalties, day of the fight weight limits and a lot of mind games from Roach to try and get an advantage for his fighter Chavez. I see Roach trying every trick in the book to throw Rubio off so Chavez Jr. can somehow win this fight.

Tell me who has ever been like chavez sr.??? No one!! So why do all the haters wanna compare jr with his father??.. That’s just dumb!! I think jr is a good fighter and most people font give him the respect he deserves!! You people already making excuses about him being overweight for the fight or bob arum fixing this and roach that!! Don’t like him?? Don’t follow his news!! Or don’t watch his fights! Regardless he is the champ and he has big crowds, and sells alot! You are the losers!! Tough fight for jr!! But he’s got my support!! Hopefully he’ll prove all the haters wrong!! If not!… Well let’s move on!!

  • Top Fighter says:

Chavez Junior is going beat up that chunt Rubio by T.K.O.!

After that, he is going to shock the world when he T.K.O’s Martinez also!

  • p4p King says:

Chavez is a coward for not facing Martinez. Martinez is his MANDATORY and he’s taking the easier fight with Rubio. Chavez is afraid of Martinez, so he’s a coward. actions speak louder than words.

  • Freddy says:

Chavez jr wins against rubio, chavez will prove all the critics that say hes a bum,a coward wrong,i believe chavez is goog enough to beat martinez chavez has the heart and will to winn plus hi is improving on his boxing we know he can fight.

  • MelMan543 says:

I really don’t tink Chavez Jr. Is going to beat Rubio but if he does how much time he is going to be runing from Martinez. For me another Arums protected boxer. Maybe he ask for a catch weight to win.

  • Pacphobia says:

I think Sergio Martinez hates Chavez’s skinny baby face!!!
If Martinez gets that fight with Chavez Jr, he could peel his face in the worst way!

  • Punchy Potorff says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rubio wins the belt from Junior. Rubio is a big puncher and extremely tough all around. He’s been flattened a couple times, but he hasn’t tried to pad his record except in his first couple years. Junior will definitely have to be on his game every second of every round… or it will be lights out Junior.

  • P4P says:

El cobarde Chavez jr will beat Rubio. He will come in way past the middlewieght limit. El Covarde needs to man up and fight Martinez already.

  • KILLERBUD says:

    chavez the wbc chump

  • KILLERBUD says:

I never did find out how the wbc could take Martinez’s earned title away from him and give it to some weakling.

  • chuleton says:

An undefeated record means nothing. It’s who and when you fight. Ali has losses but is considered great because of how and who he fought

  • Future Champ says:

Rubio is going to get his a beat

  • The Boxing Guru says:

I have been waiting for Rubio to get his shot after knocking out David Lemieux against either Chavez, Martinez or Saul Alvarez because I know for a fact, that he will knock any or all of these guys out. He is cagey with huge punching power that many fighters don’t realize until its too late.I guarantee he wins over Chavez.

This is some sit. Chavez going to knock him clean out of the ring!
Don’t people know the kid will outweigh Rubio by 30 lbs.????

  • Boxer says:

Chavez protect days are over soon… he eventually will have to prove himself and he will. To say he is under his father shadow is not something that anyone should be impressed. Chavez is considered one of the best if not the best mexican fighter of all time. To beat that only time and a lot of skill will prove it, but not Jr.

  • p4p King says:

    Chavez is a COWARD

  • chuleton says:

Seems like Jr is nothing like his father. What a shame . Instead of out doing his pops like Floyd mayweather Jr , he is just living under his shadow.
