By Allen Fox: Former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto (57-7-2, 34 KO’s) picked up his second consecutive win at light welterweight in stopping lightweight Adailton De Jesus by a 4th round TKO in Saturday night at the Playa del Carmen, in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Soto knocked the overmatched De Jesus down in the 3rd with a left to the head followed by a left to the midsection and then finished him off in the 4th with two hard left hooks to the head that put De Jesus down for the second and final time in the fight.

Soto looked slower than when he fought at lightweight and had some visible flab around his midsection. However, after a slow feeling out first round, Soto was on the attack mode in the second round. He pressured the Brazilian De Jesus constantly, nailing him with mostly right hands in the second round. De Jesus was able to land an occasional right hand or left hook that did little to stop Soto’s forward pressure.

In the 3r round, Soto increased his work rate and really started opening up with a lot of shots. He connected with three straight left hooks to the head at one point in the first minute of the round. Moments later, Soto was enraged when De Jesus pulled him forward and then hit Soto on the sides while he was bent over. The referee stopped the action and gave De Jesus a warning, after which De Jesus attempted to touch gloves and apologize to Soto. However, Soto appeared angry and ignored De Jesus’ attempts at touching gloves briefly. Soto did eventually touch gloves a 10 seconds later but he really went on the attack after that and hurt De Jesus with a left hook to the head that caused him to stagger slightly and back up. Soto then poured it on, landing three straight left hooks to put De Jesus on the canvas. A badly hurt De Jesus spit out his mouthpiece while he was down and with seconds left in the round. After his mouthpiece was reinserted, the round ended.

Soto wasted no time in immediately going after De Jesus in the 4th, attacking him all out and blasting him with four consecutive right uppercuts to the head. De Jesus then retreated to the corner and was hit with two hard left hooks to the head that sent him down for the final time. The fight was then halted at this point.

Soto has still yet to fight an actual light welterweight despite having now fought twice at the new weight. In both fights, he’s faced lightweights. The WBA has given Soto a high ranking of number #1 in the division despite his lack of fights against genuine light welterweights.

In other action on the card, former World Boxing Council lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (63-11-1, 54 KO’s) defeated journeyman Sammy Ventura (26-22, 20 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO. Castillo was defeated in his previous bout by Jorge Paez Jr. by a 12 round decision. Castillo, 37, has seen better days and doesn’t look suited for the welterweight division. He needs to take off a lot of weight and fight at lightweight if he’s to have any real chance of doing anything with the remainder of his career.
