Image: Great Time for British BoxingBy Dan Henderson: We have four world champions Carl Froch (WBC Super Middleweight), Amir Khan (WBA Super and IBF Light Welterweight), Nathan Cleverly (WBO Light Heavyweight) and Ricky Burns (WBO “Interim” Lightweight champion).

Well we have to start with Carl Froch after seeing of various challengers with the exception of the excellent Mikkel Kessler the Cobra has marched his way through the “Super Six Tourney” and has secured a date with destiny on the 17th of December for that will be the night he will face WBA Super Middleweight champion and tournament favourite Andre Ward in the glitzy Atlantic City. This is a tough fight for Froch as Ward has good boxing skills and good hand speed but this fight is as equally tough for Ward as he has never faced an opponent with the heart and will of Carl Froch.

December the 10th will see Britain’s Light Welterweight king Amir Khan face off against America’s Lamont Peterson in Washington D.C in what should a good entertaining fight. Whatever you think of Khans attitude and persona he is a magnificent fighter especially now he is under the tutelage of renowned trainer Freddie Roach he is a completely different fighter to the one we see coming up the domestic ranks and suffering scares against Michael Gomes and Willie Limond. A lot of fans seem to refer back to the fight against Breidis Prescott where Khan was sensationally knocked out in under a minute I feel the result of that fight transformed both fighters careers Khan going on to win to world titles at Light Welterweight and Prescott now being a bigger name. Khans opponent Lamont Peterson who has only ever lost to Timothy Bradley and had one draw against Victor Ortiz in 31 fights is not to bad admittedly he is not the best opponent out there for Khan but he is extremely confident that he can cause the upset.

Nathan Cleverly kept his WBO crown despite being in a tough fight with domestic rival Tony Bellew it was then he wanted to bring American boxing legend Bernard Hopkins to Cardiff for a unification showdown but there was a lot of controversy surrounding Hopkin’s fight with Chad Dawson. I can confirm that Cleverly is in talks with WBA champion Beibut Shumenov for a unification bout which could take place in Wales but I don’t think that will happen I think Cleverly will have to fight in Las Vegas which should be good to get him out on American TV. Cleverly is a good technical boxer but will the pressure of him being compared to fellow Welshman Joe Calzaghe be too much only time will tell.

Last but certainly not least we have Scotland’s Ricky Burns who defied all odds and beat the hard hitting Australian Michael Katsidis over 12 tough rounds for the WBO “Interim” title. What is next for Ricky is a home coming fight in Glasgow but we still do not know who that will be against but his promoter Frank Warren has already said that a potential fight between him and fellow brit Kevin Mitchell who has now got his license back and will be fighting in 10 round fight at the beginning of the year. All I do know is Ricky Burns is the surprise package in British boxing and I’m sure we are all looking forward to his next challenge.
