McKenna (McJack): Over the last couple of months during the build up for the huge fight between WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KO’s) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO’s) Marquez’s trainer Nacho Beristain has appeared to have entertained some doubt.

Of course doubt is part of every day life and if you are human doubt is going to periodically creep into your life. But if you are the trainer for a great fighter like Marquez who will be fighting probably the most important fight of his career against Manny Pacquiao, this is not the time to express or show doubt.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has been unswerving in his conviction that his fighter will unequivocally defeat Marquez, going as far to say that Manny may knock out “El Dinamita” in the first round. Nacho Beristain on the other hand has expressed his doubt in more than one occasion. At the final press conference before the fight yesterday Beristain appeared to be wavering in his belief that Marquez can defeat the Filipino dynamo. As reported in Phil Boxing.com Beristain had this to say:

“We will try to give a good fight.” Not exactly what you would want to hear from your trainer going into a war with the top Pound for Pound fighter in the world. And try is probably not exactly the word promoter Bob Arum, who has been attempting to build this fight up from day one, wanted to hear. Arum after all is attempting to sell this fight to boxing fans at a time when recent Pay Per View (PPV) fights have fallen far short of living up to expectations.

Perhaps it was a Freudian slip by a trainer who down deep inside really doesn’t think his fighter has a chance against Pacquiao. It is not the first time that Nacho has expressed doubt. Previously Beristain lamented the fact that Marquez had lost some speed and acknowledged his loss of speed could be a problem against Pacquiao.

Prior to that Beristain said that the one thing he feared was Pacquiao’s brute force. Nacho’s doubts have repeatedly crept into his conversation leading some observers to speculate that he does not believe in his fighter’s chances against Pacquiao.
