Chavez Jr. TKOs Manfredo; Clottey stops Green

By Dan Ambrose: A huge looking WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO’s) defeated hand-picked opponent Peter Manfredo Jr. (37-7, 20 KO’s) in a 5th round stoppage tonight at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. Chavez Jr. hurt Manfredo with a right hand in the 5th and then flurried on him until referee Lawrence Cole stopped the fight. It looked like a really premature stoppage, however, as Manfredo may have been able to recover.

Chavez Jr. didn’t show huge power up to that point but he was smart enough to keep the action on the outside, which was a big departure for him. Chavez Jr. used his jab and landed with a high percentage with his shots. Manfredo, who arguably didn’t deserve to be ranked at number #4 by the WBC, basically walked into Chavez’s shots as he attempted to turn the fight into a brawl. For the most part, Chavez Jr. fought with much better discipline in this fight compared to in his last two fights against Billy Lyell and Sebastian Zbik. But then again, Manfredo didn’t look at all good and was the perfect opponent for a limited fighter like Chavez Jr. to excel against.

With this win, Chavez Jr. is now going to have to make a huge decision whether to fight former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez next or not. The WBC is saying that Chavez Jr. will have to fight Martinez next and Chavez has said he will do that. However, he would most definitely lose and lose badly to Martinez if the fight were to be made. It’s likely Chavez Jr. will vacate the title rather than facing Martinez and getting knocked out or easily beaten.

After the fight, Chavez Jr. said he’d leave it up to his promoter who he fights next but it’ll be between the following fighters: Saul Alvarez and Sergio Martinez.

In other action on the card:

Joshua Clottey TKO 2 Calvin Green
Marcus Johnson UD 6 Billy Bailey
Mickey Bey Jr UD 8 Hector Velazquez
Ivan Otero MD 4 Gino Escamilla
Wale Omotoso UD 8 Lanardo Tyner

WBC needs to force Chavez to the ring to defend his title against Martinez or strip him of the title and ask Martinez and Rubio to fight for the belt.
Rubio Vs Martinez would be such a great fight.. PPV money in this one.

They show’d Sergio Martinez at the fight like this was suppose to be some indication he’s going to be a future opponenet for Chavez.

  • Olbermann says:

wow there are a lot of very very ignorant people on this forum that are completely cluless about boxing, chavez jr is a fraud and a c omplete joke, he has fought nobodies with a super super low knock out %. he has cancelled 3 fights in the past due to from what ive heard binge drinking and coke! this fool will be his own worst enemy just like his father, the apple doesn’t fall to far from the tree, just watch how he self destructs,

  • The Snake says:

Premature stoppage, are you kidding? I thought it should have been stopped a bit earlier. Manfredo was wobbling all over the place, sinking on the ropes, not throwing anything back.

  • wicky says:

I’d like to see Chavez vs Canelo, and the winner battling Martinez.

  • rjhill says:

A pre mature stoppage indeed .He landed a clean shot but missed a lot on his finishing flurry. The reff. once again failed the boxing fans on a decent fight.

  • rjhill says:

If Manfredo is # 4, then boxing middlewieght division is the worse it has been since it,e inception.

  • Dubb C says:

well i for one didn’t see this mess, chavez is a fake and a paper champion and a good for nothing want to be! this guy is feeding of his dad’s name if he want respect he will have to earn it, Maraavilla and canelo are waiting by the phone.

  • Face Off says:

Chavez is a BUM! Face Martinez you coward!

  • NEW says:

    @Big brown Doggy

Get real Maravilla is #2 p4p, everybody knows who he is. Chavez jr is just a bum. A scared little boy thats been using his daddy’s name.

Chavez needs to man up already and fight Sergio Martinez!

  • Big Brown Doggy says:

Canelo is next. Big money there. Nobody knows Martinez.

  • Ricky says:

He basically said that he respects Maravilla and thinks he is a good fighter. He also said that he wants to fight the best opposition but it does not depend only on him, basically saying that it is his promoter who decides who he will be facing next. At the end he said that he fears no one.

I hope this means that he could fight either: Maravilla, Canelo or the fight that I would like to see the most, against Veneno Rubio.

  • Master CHeef says:

Would someone please be kind enough to relay to me what Chavez jr said in the post fight interview? I heard them ask about maravilla but couldn’t hear the response. Thanks in advance!
