Brandon Rios wants Marcos Maidana to be first fight at 140

By Lisa Madeina: It’s no secret to why Brandon Rios is one of the most exciting prospects in the world. According to Yahoo sports, Rios was quoted saying “he wants Maidana, he wants war!” Rios also went on to say he’ll take on Juan Manuel Marquez and wants war with Gamboa. Rios claims he tells his trainer every day that he wants the same war that Castillo and Corrales once had. But is Rios biting more than he could chew challenging Maidana?

I think it’s safe to say Maidana is a high risk decent reward kind of fighter. But on the other hand this fight does have fight of the year written all over it. Wouldn’t you agree? If Brandon could carry weight properly at 140 then sky’s the limit. Right? I think he can. If they match him carefully and keep him away from some one who can out box him, keep him in wars, the type of fights he likes by the way, he’ll go as far as he can take his self.

If Khan sticks around the division, the public would demand this fight [Khan-Rios]. But in all honesty I see a draw if they do tangle. In my opinion. Khan doesn’t take his time when he fights and flurry’s every time he gets the chance. He also has bad corner instructions. In the Khan-Maidana fight, when Amir dropped Maidana vicious body shots, instead of Freddy Roach telling Khan to go back down to the body he never told him to do so. Khan could ended the fight early.

Brandon Rios is a force to be reckon with. And whether people think he’s limited or not, he’s still a problem for anybody from 135 to 140. Even 147 if possible. Maybe Ortiz?

rios vs maidana, great fight, but would it happen? Not many people gave Peterson a chance against kahn. Kahn over rated,Rios would knock kahn silly. Then the true heavy hitters can bang it out!!!

  • Olbermann says:

Brandon Rios will be the biggest thing that will bring a lot of much needed excitment to Boxing! he is a “Salvador Sanchez ” he brings action warrior toe toe fighting and he is very balanced he has , Power, Speed, boxing ability and above all heart and passion. wow this kid is the real deal folks

  • charolastra says:

I lost repect for ortiz so if brandon could make the weight and do well with it I would love to see rios punch around ortiz but through all the criticisms of him being limited i love watching him fight he is exciting those three rounds he had against urbano antillon were awesome

  • Anti hater phaser says:

Rios Vs Bradley, 140, make it happen.

  • el tecolote says:

to johnny nelson, not a good tournmanet, since rios is above kats, and prescott by far, those 2 bums don’t deserve to be in the ring with Rios.I feel the same about Maidana, but his win against ortiz gives him the benefit of the doubt until Rios blasts through him in 6 rounds or less.

  • Johnny nelson says:

Rios, maidana, prescott, katsidis in a special tournament!

Katsidis vs prescott is one id love to see

  • brian says:

madiana wins less 6 rounds and gamboa wins by decision gamboa wont slug it he’ll out box rios quick come on gamboa did only win a gold medal in the olympics so he can box hahaand marquez would just counter punch rios all day rios too slow n too noticable to see where his punches are coming from

  • HAYWARD says:

    rios vs burns…..

  • Harry says:

    Be afraid,be very afraid

  • Matt says:

That would be a great fight, Lots of action. I couldn’t pick that fight. I think Brandon has the better boxing skills but Maidana just edges in power. It is generally a 50/50 fight.

    Great fight for the fans

Rios can beat pretty much anyone at 140. Acosta is a solid boxer and puncher, and Rios walked thru him. Maidina is a good test. I still think he can beat Maidina and then beat Khan. My other fighter at this weight is The Ghost. Any of these two can beat Khan and Bradly..

  • el tecolote says:

Here comes a silly question regarding this article, maybe someone can answer. Is Rios saying he is immediately moving up in weight and wanting to fight Maidana,or is he saying once he does move up whenever that may be ,he’d like his first fight at 140 to be Maidana?

  • help says:

finally some talk other than pac floyd or marquez.. thank you very much

  • Patrick says:

I wouldn’t call Acosta a defensive fighter. I’d say he is a very technical offensive fighter. But anyway, Acosta is no joke and Rios was able to chop him down in a thriller of a fight. If Rios carries 140 pounds well, he’s going to be a serious force at Jr Welter.

  • mi verga says:

Have any of you heard of Rios, watch the Acosta fight, Rios is serious. Acosta was no joke, and a very defensive technical boxer, and Rios brutalized the dude. Acosta was an avoided lightweight, and Rios hammered him.

  • Patrick says:

I think Rios’ punches are a little sharper and shorter than Maidana’s. I’d bet Rios would stop Maidana.

  • Boxing's Main Fan says:

Let me say I am a big Rios fan. I follow him and he is definetly exciting and talented. With that being said I am also a Maidana fan. If you put these two together Maidana is going to come out the winner.

  • Danny Washington says:

hahahahah maidana= most over rated fighter @ 140, Khan schooled him, morales owned him, maidana who??????

  • boxingisart says:

Branden will do a serious damage to Manny’s face .hehahehahe

  • everybody's an expert says:

Rios stylistically matches up well with his own style of fighting, aggressive and coming forward. I think he would struggle with the likes of Marquez and Kahn, even at Marquez’s advanced age. The other fighters mentioned, I think he would stand a good chance at beating. Would love to see him in against Maidana.

  • mi verga says:

Rios is for real, he poses a threat to anyone he faces in the ring.

  • MAX says:

Rios would get koed by J.M.Marquez. But i think he would beat Gamboa though.

  • el tecolote says:

I’ve been a fan of marque since the early 90s when he fought at the great western forum. He whipped pacquiao,no doubt, but at this point and time,Brandon Rios is too much for him. He would take punches for sure, but his punches would eventually ko the by then 39 year old Marquez. It hurts me to type that, but i’m not a blind pactard and i can see what will happen and accept it. I don’t want to see that fight, but Maidana on the other hand,Rios would destroy Maidana in less than 6 rounds in the undisputed fight of the year.

  • polo says:

regarless of what u think about him i think he is way overrated. But has the balls to take on anyone u must respect that.

  • I, me, myself & my hot taco says:

He is good but he must take it easy, Marquez is an old dangerous experience boxer for him.

  • wade says:

Dont think Rios will last long in the higher weight divisions given his style. He has taken too many shots and is starting to show signs of wear and tear. But he is entertaining.

  • Jmoney713 says:

Well that’s why he’s asking for this fight, so he can show his arsenal. I don’t think Maidana would take the fight cuz he’s looking for big money fights. Rios-Matthysse should be a rumble too. I got Rios whoopin both tho.

  • mivergasays says:

i wondr if rios has what it takes or if his arsenal is as big as his mouth. be humble you havent won anything what gives you the right to go challenging fighters when you ain t proved noyhing yet this type of guys get on my nerves.

  • Money TG says:

    @big brown doggy
    Really! Really!

  • TOOL says:

Never gonna happen with Boob Arum. Maidana would stop Rios in one round.

  • El Terrible says:

Marquez 4real i know he didnt watch the fight.slow down some dont get lit up rios

  • Tsipa7 says:

He’s probably chasing the dollar like Khan who wants to fight Floyd. Trying to bite more than the can chew.

  • SUGARrays says:

love this guy such a throwback, think in 2012 he should get fights made that will spread his name throughout the world like katsdis in march in austrial , ricky burns june scotland, kevin mitchel england august, gamboa MSG dec. then in 2013 guerrero, chris john , broner jmm . i know its wishful thinking but those type of fights will make him a star and i think he could become biggest ppv draw of the centurary. but all those lightweight fights shouldtnt b on ppv untill he shows every1 who watches hw exciting he really is.

  • lofty says:

Rios will get bullied by Murray

  • MAD LION! says:

Rios is a beast! I think they should make that Maidana fight ASAP. I’d like to see him fight Gamboa after that. He should stay away from Marquez because he does not have the skills to match up.

  • bayou says:

brandon vs gamboa first, then a fight with maidana or lucas

  • Anonymous says:

Rios wants too much too soon let it happen

  • Jmoney713 says:

Brandon Rios should fight Humberto Soto or Katsidis first, then he can call out bigger names. He’s a good fighter to watch and a good corner. Robert Garcia has done a great job training Rios. Rios-Maidana would be fireworks. Both have power but I see Rios taking the W on this one.

  • HandSome Ben says:

I think he should hold off on fighting MAIDANA…..

  • Olbermann says:

Rios is an animal he will destroy chino, chino has a very very qustionable chin and goes down even with body shoots, Rios is the next Saul Sanchez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is bringing excitment back to boxing

  • Micky says:

@Carlios: Chino will eat Rios alive

  • Carlios says:

Rios is an animal. He can go all the way, yes he’s a brawler but has a very tight guard and takes the shots on the arms and gloves. He will pick maidana apart as maidana hasn’t got the best chin and becomes tired late on. He can also beat JMM imo as he can grind him down to a tight UD

  • APBrooklyn says:

This Rios guy is no joke indeed. want to see him beat on katsidis. he shouldnt step up to maidana until he has a couple good fights @ 140…gamboa would be great but is kinda small in frame vs Rios. Yes, marquez would pick him apart

  • Migue 805 says:

Don’t get me wrong Rios is a good fighter but I think he still has a long way to go before he calls out the big doggs in the game, Right???

  • rjhill says:

Brandon Rios ,as good as he is .,Should not want any part of Marcos maidana, who at this wieght will beat Rios up.

  • the boxer says:

Marquez would STOP Rios in 9 rounds. He isnt in his level and would get picked apart.

  • Big Brown Doggy says:

Branden rios is a beast! Future star. While whipe PAC and Floyd off the face of the earth
