Arum guessing that Mayweather faces Erik Morales next rather than Pacquiao

Image: Arum guessing that Mayweather faces Erik Morales next rather than PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Bob Arum is under the impression that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) is looking to fight 35-year-old Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KO’s) on May 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada rather than looking to fight against Pacquiao.

Arum told the Philippine Star “You know who the little fella they have already approached is? It’s Erik Morales. And Erik will confirm it absolutely. Erik has been approached to make the fight. I’m sure he’ll take it for the money. Why wouldn’t he? I don’t now who’s gonna buy it, but that’s what the whole nonsense is about….Who cares? There are some better guys out there for Manny to fight.”

Boy, that sounds like sour grapes to me. So what if Mayweather is fighting Morales? It’s a good fight, a lot better than some of the fights that Arum has been putting Pacquiao in lately. I’d take Mayweather-Morales over Pacquiao-Mosley any day of the week. Besides, if Arum isn’t interested in making the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight by having Pacquiao be available for the Olympic style drug testing for performance enhancing drugs, what can Mayweather do? Arum can make the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happen. All he has to do is tell Pacquiao to stay in the U.S during his entire training camp so that he can be tested every day, if needed, and we’ve got a fight. Arum probably won’t do that, so why does he care that Mayweather is looking to put together his own fights?

I thought Morales looked pretty good in his last fight against Pablo Cesar Cano last September. That was an exciting fight filled with a lot of action, a lot of blood and a lot of nonstop trading. We haven’t see that in any of Pacquiao’s mismatches in the past three years, have we?

Arum still doesn’t know who Mayweather will be fighting next. He’s just speculating. I imagine he wishes that Mayweather would agree to fight Pacquiao, but how can he when Pacquiao won’t be available for the testing for half of the training camp. What good is that?
