Are people writing Manny off too quickly in a fight against Floyd?

Image: Are people writing Manny off too quickly in a fight against Floyd?By Lisa Madeina: Boxing…it’s a sport of hit and not get hit, it’s a chess match, you know, poetry in motion. But it’s also a sport where anything can happen and one punch can change, or end everything. Agreed? I hope so. Which brings me to my point, are people writing off Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao off to quickly?

I’ll be the first to say, I think Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to win in a tough 12 round match-up. But that’s only my opinion, and it could never be a fact until the two square off in the ring. I love both fighters simply because I love boxing. It’s also safe to say that Mayweather is not invincible. That 0 that he has on his record only means he hasn’t met his match. The closest I’ve ever seen Mayweather beaten, was in the Castillo 1 match-up and the Zab Judah match-up (well for ad least the first four rounds).

Let’s go back to the Mayweather-Judah fight. If you ask me Judah clearly set the blueprint on how to beat Floyd. When the fight was in the earlier rounds that is. He even knocked Floyd Mayweather down , but the ref declared it as a slip. I just want to say this…if Zab Judah was more disciplined and conditioned, he would’ve beat Floyd Mayweather via unanimous decision. In my honest opinion. That straight left caught Floyd time and time again. The right hook was also evident in that fight also. Floyd admitted himself he waited for Zab to get tired to assault him. But when Zab was fresh he clearly got the better of the two.

That’s the last time Floyd fought someone with pretty much the same athleticism and youth as himself. Mosley was old, Ortiz is very bulky, but Manny is very athletic. Zab said Floyd was hard to hit, but he ran out of fuel to simply let his hands go and keep boxing. Another thing is Floyd couldn’t use that Philly Shell to well against Judah, so that straight left found it’s way every time.

I don’t think Manny’s lost it like some people claim. I still think his hand speed is still enough to give fighters fits, still has great foot work, and his defense isn’t great, but he did make Juan Manuel Marquez miss lots of shots here and there. All I’m saying is I believe Manny is a tougher fight than some people think. Floyd hasn’t seen a fighter like him in a while or probably ever. Same for Manny, if he thought Marquez was a counter puncher then he’s in for a world of frustration against the best defensive in the sport.

Also is Mayweather willing to risk a war like JMM did. Marquez had to sell out a little and brawl to get some good hits in. For every one punch Floyd throws, Manny will rush in with about four or five punches. It possibly may end up looking like the Dawson-Pascal fight, possibly not. Maybe everybody including Floyd is right. Maybe Floyd beats Manny like he did Marquez, maybe. But I just don’t see it that way. Floyd hasn’t seen Manny footwork, hand speed, and a solid will to win in awhile. I think the first six rounds will be hell for Floyd, then I also see him adjusting while Manny becomes even more aggressive due to his will to win.

It’s just a gal’s honest opinion. But I really believe people shouldn’t count Manny out to quickly. After all Arum isn’t. he’s been around the sport 40 years. When he’s ready to cash out on Manny with a Mayweather-Pacquiao match-up, he will. But this is a man who’s been around the sport for years, he knows when a fighter is done and ready to be cashed out. And Manny’s not ready yet. To be cashed out that is. Share your thoughts.
