Image: Wladimir Klitschko with huge size advantage over Jean Marc MormeckBy Eric Thomas: IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3-49 KO’s) will be sporting a tremendous height and size advantage over challenger Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) on December 10th at the ESPRIT arena, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

In their press conference in Germany, Wladimir, 6’6″ and the supposedly 5’11” Mormeck stood side by side and then back to back for photos and Wladimir appears to be at least eight inches taller than Mormeck. He’s got to be 5’10” or perhaps 5’9″.

Whatever the case, it’s going to put Wladimir in a situation where he can dominate Mormeck from the outside without ever getting hit by him in this fight. Mormeck moved up in weight from the cruiserweight division in 2009 to chase bigger paydays, but he’s really got at a big disadvantage in this weight class because of his lack of power. And Mormeck also doesn’t appear to have carried his power up with him.

At cruiserweight, Mormeck was one of the biggest punchers in the division, but at heavyweight, he’s failed to knockout any of his three second tier opponents he’s been put in with. And now Mormeck is facing what many people see as the best heavyweight in the division in Wladimir Klitschko.

I don’t know how Mormeck will be able to get past the height and reach advantage that Wladimir has in this fight. Obviously he won’t, and he’ll end up eating a lot of leather in this mismatch.

Wladimir was unable to score his 50th knockout in his last fight against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye last July, but I think Wladimir will have no problems picking up his 50th knockout win over Mormeck. This will be too easy unless Mormeck fights above his size on December 10th.

The 39-year-old Mormeck really needs to get a clue after this loss and move back down to the cruiserweight division because it’s going to take him ages for him to get another title shot after Wladimir knocks him out. I suppose Mormeck can go back to fighting 2nd tier heavyweights and the sanctioning bodies will eventually push him up to a high enough spot for one of the heavyweight champions to show interest but by then Mormeck will likely be beyond 40. He’s better off moving down and quickly fighting for a title at that weight class where his limited size won’t hinter him.
