Image: Vitali will attempt to lure Haye out of retirementBy John F. McKenna (McJack): The London Sun is reporting that World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) has instructed close associates to do whatever is necessary to lure former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) out of retirement.

Haye announced on Thursday, October 13 that he was going to abandon any thought of continuing his professional boxing career and was retiring from the ring. “The Hayemaker” had long said that he would retire upon his 31st birthday which was yesterday.

Haye suffered a humiliating loss to heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) on July 2. The loss was a huge disappointment to David’s loyal British fans who had come to believe that he would live up to his prefight boasts that he would leave “Dr. Steelhammer” whimpering on the canvas. Haye’s boasting and “trash talk” was so effective that the odds makers in Britain favored him to win. The reality, however was that David won scarcely a round against his dominant opponent.

It was thought by many that Haye would elect to extend his retirement date so that he could erase the memory of his one sided loss to Vladimir with a victory.

After Vitali Klitschko TKO’d Tomasz Adamek on September 10 it appeared that Haye was having a change of heart and would take on the elder of the Klitscho’s after Vitali called him out. Haye reciprocated and indicated that he would be interested in a match up with Vitali.

Earlier this week though a series of contradictory news articles began to circulate with regard to whether or not a Haye – Klitschko fight was going to happen. Haye stated that he had heard nothing from the Klitschko camp for a number of weeks. At the same time however, Klitschko manager Bernd Boente stated that he had been in constant contact with the Haye camp in an effort to line up a Haye – Klitschko fight.

It is pretty clear that Haye will not fight Vitali unless he receives a 50/50 split as he did in his fight with Wladimir. Under normal circumstances the idea of a challenger receiving a 50/50 split with a champion would be ludicrous, but these are not ordinary times. Vitali wants desperately to fight Haye and would do almost anything to get him into the ring.

Haye being the self promoter he is recognizes Vitali’s desire to fight him and will exploit that desire.

It is unlikely that the boxing world has heard the last of David Haye.
