Tim Bradley signs with Top Rank, hopes it leads to big fights

By Chris Williams: WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley has officially signed with Top Rank Promotions as of Wednesday. Bradley now hopes that the signing will lead to him getting some big fights. However, there’s one fighter in particular that Bradley has his eyes on and that’s Top Rank’s biggest star WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

Other than Pacquiao, there’s really not a lot of options for Bradley with Top Rank fighters unless he wants to fight unbeaten welterweight Mike Jones, who isn’t a big star or even close to being a star at this point. If Bradley doesn’t get a fight with Pacquiao, then he’ll pretty much will be right where he’s been with his previous promoter Gary Shaw. Bradley didn’t need Top Rank to get a fight against Amir Khan, as Khan has been looking to fight Bradley for the past six months.

Speaking with RingTv.com, Bradley said “Man, I can’t wait. I cannot wait. I think that this definitely opens up the gates for me. Top Rank is huge. They know exactly how to promote fighters. They make their fighters superstars.”

Actually, Top Rank doesn’t always make their fighters huge superstars. They have plenty of fighters that have been fighting with them for years and yet they are no popular than Bradley, and actually much less so in most cases. They have a number popular fighters such as Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Nonito Donaire. But only Pacquiao and Cotto can really be considered stars. Gamboa, Donaire and Lopez are mainly known by hardcore boxing fans in the U.S, which makes them non-stars as of now.

Bradley won’t become a star unless he takes on guys like Khan, Marcos Maidana, Erik Morales, and Lucas Mattysse. Even then, he still might become a star unless he becomes more exciting to watch.

Bradley fights 40-year-old Joel Casamyayor on the Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez undercard on November 12th. This will be Bradley’s first fight with Top Rank, and this isn’t a fight that only Top Rank could make. Bradley’s old promoter could make this fight as well, so Bradley has yet to see the big fights that he was hoping he’d get when he signed with Top Rank. The only one I can see Bradley is Pacquiao. If he doesn’t get that fight, then he’s right back to where he started from with his old promoter unless Bob Arum of Top Rank is going to match Bradley up against someone like Brandon Rios, who isn’t a huge star yet either, or Cotto.
