By Eric Thomas: In the latest boxing news, WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15 KO’s) is reportedly in negotiations to defend his title against 42-year-old number #14 ranked WBA contender Cedric Boswell (35-1, 26 KO’s) on December 3rd in Germany.

Povetkin was recently looking to fight 38-year-old former WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman but he apparently wanted too much money for the fight according to reports.

The fight could take place in Finland. Boswell, a 17-year pro, has an impressive but he’s mostly fought lower level opposition from the 2nd tier during his long career. His best wins have come against an old Oliver McCall, Roman Greenberg and Owen Beck. That’s about it. The other wins have come against largely journeyman and/or guys that are just not even good enough to be considered journeyman.

When Boswell stepped it up eight years ago against a then prime Jameel McCline, Boswell was stopped in the 10th round. It’s been pretty much smooth sailing since then with Boswell largely facing 2nd tier opposition.

Povetkin’s management aren’t in a hurry to put him in with anyone good for his optional defense. This is a pure milking fight. The real test is what happens after Povetkin wins this. Will he continued to be matched softly somehow or will he defend his title against his number #1 mandatory challenger, which in this case is Hasim Rahman. He doesn’t have much to worry for at least the first half of 2012. Rahman is a very winnable fight, even for a limited fighter like Povetkin. But the number #3 contender Robert Helenius would likely beat Povetkin if he can land his big shots.
