Pacquiao-Marquez 24/7 episode one = A lot of wasted video by HBO

By Dave Lahr: Well, I just finished watching Pacquiao-Marquez 24/7 episode one and must say it’s one of the most wasteful episodes I’ve ever seen before. It reminded me of a student paper thrown together with a lot of filler to get to a certain word length.

Instead of seeing a lot of good training between the two fighters, we the boxing fans got to see a lot of video of the first two fights between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, along with video of Pacquiao’s sparring partner Jorge Linares getting beaten up by Antonio DeMarco and stopped in the 11th round. What a waste.

We already saw the Linares-DeMarco fight last week, and we don’t need to have the focus put on those guys. I got a kick how Pacquiao was saying that Linares is so similar to Marquez in fighting style, and then we watch Linares get stopped by DeMarco. Yeah, great comparison, Pacquiao. I’d say Linares and Marquez are about as similar as Marquez and Pacquiao. There is no comparison whatsoever.

So much of this episode begged for editing and should have never been made it to HBO on Saturday. We got to see a couple of Pacquiao’s helpers sparring with each other. Why this was shown? I have no idea.

A good portion of the broadcast centered around Alex Ariza, the strength and conditioning coach for Pacquiao. They showed Ariza putting through Pacquiao’s various resistance exercises and agility drills, all of which I see absolutely no benefit at all to Pacquiao. If anything, all the resistance exercises are adding muscle to Pacquiao but at the cost of slowing him down in terms of hand speed and ring movement.

If I was in charge of Pacquiao as his promoter, I’d lose Ariza so fast his head would be spinning. I feel that boxers are much better off training in the ring rather than wasting time developing muscle groups that will only slow them down. Since Ariza has been with Pacquiao, he looks a lot slower to me than he was before Ariza started working on his conditioning. But it was sad to see Pacquiao wasting valuable time on the various exercises that Ariza was putting him through. I don’t see any of this helping Pacquiao’s hand speed, which is his best asset. Too much time was spent on showing Ariza and his flashy car. That needed to go. I don’t care what kind of car Ariza drives and he’s not someone boxing fans need to be focusing on. Pacquiao is where the camera needed to be pointed.

And all the video of Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, needed to go as well. If you’ve seen one video of Roach gloating about Pacquiao’s success you’ve seen him all. It’s all so redundant and forlorn.

The footage of Marquez in Mexico was a lot better, as we saw him sparring and working out on the track. I thought the video of Marquez eating dinner with his wife and kids really didn’t serve any purpose. I would have cut that video out. It was boring and not relevant.

My grade on Pacquiao-Marquez episode 1 is a ‘D’. It wasn’t as bad as some of the other HBO 24/7 series episodes, but it was still a very bad episode crammed full of pointless video. I got the impression that it was just some guy with a camera making it up on the fly without any real thought of direction.

With Pacquiao you’ve got to get emotion out of him to make it interesting. It’s not good when he’s staring looking wooden. We have to put him situations where he succeed by showing him showing anger, sadness or some kind of real emotion other than glee or an emotionless stare. I thought HBO blew it with this episode. Marquez was perfect just as we was. He’s a natural and has natural charisma, but the restaurant footage, as well as the emphasis on his trainer Nacho Beristain was a waste. I’d have cut that out of the video.

    Floydiot

Not only you man, I also got screwed for hoping Floyd would make a good show. Floyd fighting a newbie pacquiao’s sparring partner was lame enough, but to ending it with a cheapshot made it worst..LOL, so don’t worry. Even Youtube rejected the post of that lame fight Å$$ fight. hahahahha

  • Floydiot says:

WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND IS WHY HAVEN’T THEY ANNOUNCE THE PPV RESULTS FROM FLOYD-ORTIZ MATCH????? AM I ONE OF THE ONLY 800,OOO PPV DISAPPOINTING BUYER WHO GOT RIPPED OFF?????

  • kÅMOTE says:

    You know Im right

Only one thing you’re right at, that 24/7 really is made for the likes of Floyd that is. Floyd isn’t really much of a fighter, he’s a drama queen who belongs to a soap opera. Pac and Marquez’s 24/7 on the other hand is all about fighting.. mostly about their training, no drama.

I and you know I’m Right!

  • barry says:

Dave, welcome back. But sorry, there is this guy by the name of Chris Williams. He sure hates Pacquiao and you and him are going to better each other on who can best put Pacquiao down. By the looks of it, Chris Williams is doing an excellent job since you went on hiatus. Dave, uou have to step up the ante and do what you used to do best. Come on Dave, go go go.

  • You Know I'm Right says:

HBO 27/7 centered around 2 guys that speak really bad English just doesn’t work. This show was made for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and it clearly shows.

I also can tell that Manny Pacquiao is training as though he was facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. He is clearly concerned about Juan Manuel Marquez.

AS HE SHOULD BE….Another 12 round controversial decision ahead folks!

    And…YOU KNOW I’M RIGHT!

  • Floyd's On Roids says:

AGAIN! Nobody is forcing anyone to watch any of the Pac/Marquez 24/7 series! If you don’t like it, simply don’t watch!

  • dan says:

You got them Charlie, loud and clear!

  • Dumb and dumber says:

hey Lahr, stop complaining and writing articles about Pacquiao. You are just jealous.

  • DamnIt says:

    @Simon

You’re right. Pac doesn’t need a penny from you so you can watch lady Gaga and get your “pennis” worth. Do you really think that without you and your kinds Pac will get broke?

  • I_am_Charlie says:

    Mr. Lahr,
These episodes are SUPPOSED to be a look into the lives of the fighters as fight night approaches. It is good to see the kind of things we saw in last night’s episode. We will see plenty of action during the fight itself, dont worry about that. As far as the footage shown from the first two fights? The big hype and great anticipation for this fight is DUE TO THESE FIRST TWO FIGHTS! its good to see that footage from these fights, it will only increase the already high hype. You’re calling this a waste of video… Let me tell you what a waste of video was, seeing that guy with big lips named Floyd slap the world in the face by burning $100 bills, or using a bundle of money as a phone to “talk” to that other idiot, who also used a bundle of money as a phone. That was part of the Ortiz/Mayweather 24/7 series… But I am assuming you thought that was a GREAT episode. Am I right?

  • Anonymous says:

yall want to see a fight? this IS the fight.

  • Anonymous says:

lahr has got a lot of nerves to say the word “waste”. what does he call his articles?

oh i forgot, he need to male a living to feed his family.

“no”t exactly you can call an HONEST LIVING.

  • Not another catch weight fight! :o says:

Why is Pacquioa even fighting a light weight if he is the best ever welterweight?

  • DamnIt says:

Dave has resurrected. Now he seems to suggest he’s an expert in choreography than in boxing. Welcome to the land of the living Dave and enjoy.

  • god save the queen says:

    @ polo

You know what Marquez is like at this weight do you ?? How??
Don’t bring Floyd in to it, that was at full WW and Floyd came in over. JMM got a Small catch weight like Pac did against Cotto. I do not hear you banging on about that NO that only happens when Pac has a Catchweight and there has only been 2 of them.
Get a life and get your head out of who’s ever backside its in.

    @ Dave Lhar

Welcome back. Does this mean we will not read so many Gilfoid articles lol

  • polo says:

fire ariza?????? Never happen he is the magic possion man. Fight is a waist of time we know how marquez fights at such a weight. Not very good.

  • Simon says:

This fight is a waste of time. Marquez beat Pacquiao twice and got robbed. Pacquiao is just fighting Juan because he is old and for a pay day since he is broke! Watch MMA on the same day for free! Do not waste your money.

  • B nice says:

Dave Lahr? We all know you wrote this chris williams. You clown dont hide under your alias dave lahr.

  • dan says:

Dave Lahr, your alive! 24/7 episode last night got a good review from the other writers, they are not dumb as you are. I’m sure floydiots will agree with you.

  • PUSH FOR THE DEPOSITION NOW! says:

HBO should replace its 24/7 docu team. No imagination in providing a new look into its old brand names in boxing.

  • the boxer says:

Marquez should become a vegan and he’ll see perfect results and a ko victory.
