Khan: David Haye can come back and win a world title

Image: Khan: David Haye can come back and win a world titleBy William Mackay: It’s really touching how Amir Khan still believes former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) can make a comeback and win a world title. How Khan can think this after watching Haye get totally dominated by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last July is unclear.

Haye looked terrible, just running around the ring, flopping on the canvas and looking at the referee for sympathy.

Here’s what Khan had to say about Haye at Sky Sports News: “Klitschko is a very tough opponent and he knew he was going to have his hands full but he thought he might get into Klitschko’s head and break him that way. It didn’t work but I think David can come back. He’s still young, he’s not had too many hard fights, he can come back definitely win a world title again and finish with a win.”

Can Haye win another title? That really depends on whether he’s interested in taking on the WBA paper champion Alexander Povetkin or not. That’s Haye’s only chance of capturing a title, and thus far it doesn’t seem like he’s all too interested in going after Povetkin in a fight that won’t attract the interest of his last fight against Wladimir. Haye wants to fight WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko next, and Haye, of course, stands no chance of winning that fight.

A lot of boxing fans see this as a case where Haye is just looking to get a cash out fight and then retire from boxing. It’s hard to see it any other way because Vitali won’t be hurt by Haye’s shots and no one out-boxes Vitali. Haye can’t win a decision against Vitali, and he’d be in a fight where he would literally have to knock Vitali out in order to beat him.

But as far as Khan thinking Haye can win another title belt goes, I think Haye could win another title belt if he was interested in fighting Povetkin for his own World Boxing Association strap. But it seems hardly worth the risk involved. If Haye wins, no one would really care because Povetkin is considered a weak paper champion by a lot of fans. And if Haye loses, then his career is pretty much finished. He would likely be forced to fight at the domestic level after that and the Klitschkos would no longer have any interest in fighting him again.

Wladimir already doesn’t waste anymore time fighting him again. Wladimir might have been interested in fighting Haye one more time if he did something to try and redeem himself by beating one or two top contenders in the division. But since Haye wants no part of taking on any of the top contenders, Wladimir has excluded him from his list of future heavyweight challengers.
