By Dan Henderson: Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham born in Nottingham England is truly regarded as the greatest ever British boxer to never have won a world title he was avoided by many including the likes of Marvin Hagler, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn.

Herol was a fighter who was very hard to hit and it was that reason he went on a 38 fight unbeaten streak in which he claimed the the British, Commonwealth and European Light-Middleweight titles and the British and European Middleweight titles. He would eventually lose his unbeaten record against Sumbo Kalambay.

Herol did fight for world titles. His first title shot was against Jamaican boxer Mike ‘The Body Snatcher’ McCallum in a very close fight in which he lost a close decision. His second attempt was against the hard hitting Julian Jackson he was winning the fight quite clearly but he was hit with a ferocious shot which had knocked him out cold.

After the Jackson fight Herol would not fight for four years until an unlikely comeback in which he strung together a series of good wins which earned him another title shot this against American Charles Brewer. He was stopped in the tenth round of that fight and then he retired from the sport.

This is a British boxing legend who was feared by many. In an interview with Steve Bunce Chris Eubank had said himself that he would never have fought Herol as he was to good and to hard to hit. Herol will always be known as the greatest British fighter of all time not to win a world title.
