Image: Donaire vs. Narvaez this Saturday nightBy Chris Williams: WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) makes what will likely be his first and last title defense of his WBC/WBO belts this Saturday night against the 5’3″ Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO’s) at the WaMu Theatwer in New York, New York.

Narvaez isn’t even a bantamweight and fights in the division below bantamweight in the super flyweight division.

I guess this is the best Donaire’s promoters could and that’s very sad. You never like to see fights between guys much fighters taking on smaller ones from divisions below them. Donaire is 5’7″ and will have a four inch height and likely reach advantage against the smallish Narvaez.

Narvaez’s record looks impressive but there’s not much quality to speak of when you look at who he’s actually fought to get to where he’s at. It’s mostly B and C level from Narvaez’s home country of Argentina.

After Donaire beats Narvez, Donaire will be moving up to super bantamweight to fight WBO champion Jorge Arce. Even that fight isn’t interesting because is only 5’4″, and will be a lot shorter than Donaire. I like the fight a lot better than Donaire-Narvaez but it fails to grab me because it’s another mismatch. Arce is too small, too weak and too slow. He’ll get beaten.

Donaire will also likely be fighting WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka next year. Even that’s a mismatch. Nishioka doesn’t stand a chance against Donaire, as he’s also short, slow and old. I want to see Donaire in with Yuriorkis Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez next year, but Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum likely won’t want to put Donaire in fights that he stands a good chance of losing.
