Image: Dawson wants Pascal next, not interested in fighting Hopkins againBy Eric Thomas: Unless the California Athletic Commission or the World Boxing Council opt to overturn the results of Saturday’s victory for Chad Dawson (31-1, 18 KO’s) over WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KO’s), we will likely be seeing Dawson, the new WBC champion, defend his title against former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-2, 16 KO’s) next rather than seeing Dawson fight Hopkins again. Dawson’s said this about a rematch with Hopkins “Rematch for what? He’ll be older in another three or four months.”

Dawson defeated Hopkins by a 2nd round TKO after Dawson shouldered Hopkins off of him when Hopkins fell over the back of Dawson in the process of throwing and missing a right hand in the 2nd round on Saturday night. Hopkins fell down, injuring his left shoulder. The referee Pat Russell then spoke to Hopkins to see if he wanted to continue but because of the injury, Russell halted the fight.

Dawson said this at the post fight press conference: “You [Jean Pascal] know you were done [in their fight last year.] I’m going to finish you off in a rematch. You lost two a 46-year-old fighter [Hopkins] twice. You were out on your feet [in Dawson’s fight with Pascal in the 11th]. You got lucky. Sit down with your tight pants. Sit with your tight jeans. This time we’re going to do it in the U.S. We’ll see what happens.”

Dawson lost to Pascal in a fight that took place in Pascal’s adopted country of Canada. Dawson did little until the 11th when he flurried on Pascal and quickly had him hurt. Dawson was in the process to finishing Pascal off when Pascal accidentally headbutted Dawson causing a big cut over the right eye of Dawson. The fight was then halted.

Dawson said “I don’t know what Bernard thought he was going to do. I knew at the weigh-in yesterday that Bernard didn’t want to fight. I gave him a shoulder. This is boxing. Bernard Hopkins disappointed a lot of fights tonihgt. I was looking forward to a great fight. Bernard cut my night short. Yeah, he was faking. Common, man. He’s no gangster. A gangster would have gotten up and fight like a man. Pascal, I want Pascal. I want to avenge that loss.
