Dawson did the right thing by getting Hopkins off his back

Image: Dawson did the right thing by getting Hopkins off his backBy Dan Ambrose: Some of Bernard Hopkins’ fans are unhappy how Hopkins was thrown down and injured by Chad Dawson last night in Hopkins’ second round TKO loss at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Dawson had enough of Hopkins and put him down when Hopkins jumped his back.

The loss made Hopkins look to some people like he was faking an injury, although not to Hopkins’ diehard boxing fans. They saw Dawson as the villain by tossing Hopkins to the canvas. But I think Dawson did the right thing.

If you look at the fight, Hopkins was doing some dirty stuff in there by jumping on Dawson earlier and forcing him to the canvas, hitting and then diving in to grab. It all came to a head in the 2nd round when Hopkins missed a right hand and then jumped on the back of Dawson, holding him down.

Dawson must of said to himself, ‘Forget this, let me get this rascal off my back,’ and then got Hopkins off his back the quickest way he could by dumping the load on the canvas. Hopkins was asking for it by jumping on Dawson’s back like that, and what Dawson did goes with the territory.

When you do dirty stuff like jumping on someone’s back, you got to expect some dirty stuff in return. It’s too bad Hopkins injured his shoulder but that’s how it is when things get rough. It’s a two way street. You get rough and sometimes your opponent gets rough in return and it doesn’t work out well.

I’m not surprised Dawson doesn’t want to give Hopkins a rematch. Dawson doesn’t respect Hopkins after last night, and he only wants to fight guys that he feels are a challenge to him. It took Dawson years to get a fight with Hopkins because he was ignored until recently after Dawson was beaten by Jean Pascal. Only then, did he finally get a fight with Hopkins. And then we get this ugly end to the fight. Why give Hopkins a rematch?

Dawson shined in this fight, and turned one of Hopkins’ tricks against him by tossing him.
