Image: Boente: Vitali wants to KO Haye; Forget about a Wladimir rematchBy Sean McDaniel: Bernd Boente, the manager for WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, says he’s been in contact with former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye’s manager Adam Booth about a fight between Vitali and Haye for 2012.

Boente thinks the fight can be put together and isn’t too worried about the talk from the British Boxing Board of Control about Haye not renewing his boxing license.

Boente said to Sky Sports News “Vitali wants to finish what his brother didn’t do, meaning knock out David Haye and David said he likes Vitali’s style…A re-match with Wladimir makes no sense because there are no questions after the first fight and you can only promote a fight if there is a certain thrill. But against Vitali it’s different. Vitali has a totally different style.”

There isn’t much interest in a Wladimir-Haye rematch, so if there’s going to be a fight between one of the Klitschkos it’s going to have to be between Vitali and Haye. The only question is whether Haye and his manager are willing to take less than a 50-50 cut of the revenue. Now that Haye doesn’t have a title in his possession, he can hardly ask for equal footing in the negotiation.

You can’t really predict how well the Haye-Vitali fight will do in the UK, and around the world because Haye isn’t interested in redeeming himself by facing someone in between Vitali. That would be the smart thing to do but Haye is in a big hurry to make the Vitali fight happen and he likely wants to finish his career with the Vitali fight.

It would be good for boxing if Haye was to beat Vitali, because it would create a huge fight between Haye and Wladimir and/or a rematch between Vitali and Haye. But the chances of Haye beating Vitali are quite low. He should have fought Vitali first to begin with because with Vitali’s slow foot speed and plodding style of fighting, it would have put Haye in a better situation to win than against the more athletic Wladimir.
