Angulo vs. Kirkland this Saturday on HBO

By Dan Ambrose: Once beaten junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO’s) puts his #2 ranking by the World Boxing Council on the line this Saturday night against the formerly highly hyped slugger James Kirkland (29-1, 26 KO’s) at the Centro de Cancun in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

This is a fight that many boxing fans had been waiting for two years ago before Kirkland went to prison for a weapons violation in Texas. However, Kirkland has since lost a year of his career with his prison stint and was already knocked out earlier this year in a 1st TKO loss to Nobuhiro Ishida last April.

That loss has taken a lot of the excitement out of the Angulo-Kirkland fight. To be sure, it’s still a mouth-watering fight because both fighters are all action packed sluggers. However, Kirkland was badly exposed in the loss to Ishida for having a weak chin Kirkland hasn’t taken any chances since then, facing 3rd tier opposition to pick up two quick wins.

It’s a risky thing to go from facing low quality fights like the ones that Kirkland has been facing to that of taking Angulo, who may be the best fighter in the junior middleweight division right now. What Kirkland needed to do is face Ishida in a rematch rather than taking on Angulo who is a big step up for Angulo from the guys he’s been fighting.

Kirkland’s people obviously are willing to take the risk of facing the dangerous Angulo because of the huge payoff it would mean for Kirkland if he’s able to win. If he loses then they can blame it on his year spent in prison which has rusted his skills to a large degree. But if Kirkland can win this fight, he’ll find himself ranking in the top five in the junior middleweight division and poised for a title shot against one of the champions like Saul Alvarez.

Prison isnt what it used to be before! There is reprogramming, medication, hood politics. restriction and constriction. Mental Illness. James spirit has been broken! Take heed yall!

  • tx_made says:

as long as you take your own water and don’t eat the food, you’ll be ok James.

  • tx_made says:

    Let’s go Kirkland!

  • bernie says:

You dopes picking Howdy Doody Kirkland to win, Ive got a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell!

  • Me says:

Angulo vs Kirkland = interesting fight (maybe, if Kirkland’s chin can hold up)
Angulo vs Alvarez = straight up slugfest!

  • sweet_scientist says:

With Kenny Adams in his corner…Angulo by KO!! With Ann Wolfe in his corner…Kirkland by brutal KO!!

  • B e a r c a t says:

jailhouse rock the kirkland version. angulo in a quick KO over the con.

  • Mr. North Star says:

Kirkland got rocked by some weak Japanese fighter. Do you really think Kirkland will rock a beast like angulo? Ain’t no way. Perro wins and then fights Canelo. And that’s going be a awesome fight!

  • OTOTYY says:

This will be a good fight, Probably the last man standing will win the fight. Angulo Has a chin, and has some power, but he is a bit slow. Kirkland had a bad night against the Jap, Kirkland is fast, strong and does have a good chin (He was getting nailed with bombs by Julio when they fought and he just came right back) Kirkland should be able to win this fight in a late KO. Angulo will not do well with a fighter that moves a lot(Cintron).

  • Catbear says:

someones getting ko’d thats a certainty

  • Heavy G says:

If Kirkland can avoid a clean bomb bomb from Angulo, then he should beat him. But I dont think he can avoid getting hit cleanly and he will lose again, probably by KO. Angulo is a rough, tough guy.

  • Ziggy Stardust says:

I wish this fight could go the full 12 rounds, but somebody gone get knock the f*** out.

  • APBrooklyn says:

Aint lookin good for Kirkland…but he does hit hard so maybe El Perro will keep walking forward into one too many of those shots…thats the only chance I see here for Kirk…if it goes past 5-6 rounds then Angulo is gonna start to persistantly go in the kill…then James is finito.

  • john says:

Hopefully not a Pay-per-view ! Not worth it. And to watch Kirkland get demolished by Angulo won’t be pretty either. They keep this guy in a cage in Mexico no one really wants to fight him. He, in my opinion is the only decent hope in the Sergio Martinez weight class. He’d get his butt kicked but it might could go 12.

  • true says:

after what i saw in he’s last fight kirkland lost every single point on my book: if a powerless unknown fighter could ko kirkland col in one roun i can predict one more time he will be ko : angulo has got what it takes to fight kirkland and lara together. kirkland wasent match carrefully these time . angulo win by first round ko .

  • B e a r c a t says:

I got Kirkland committing another felony

  • NJ REBEL says:

    I got Kirkland by KO

  • Anti hater phaser says:

This is a fantasy match up. Risky for both fighters but Im thinking as long as no one gets beaten too bad it could be a win win for both. Canelo should fight the winner.

  • john says:

angulo should have faced lara? how about lara should have rematched molina first

  • bestknown says:

    its a good match up

  • Clarviaux says:

Howd it feel for the tellin when you go to the bathroom or what you have to eat. Lights out! Is this what you use for discipline. Id rather eat a couple of raw eggs and go jogging.
    Angullo in 1!

  • Mr. North Star says:

Perro going bite this dude’s head off!

  • Clarviaux says:

Kirkland spent almost 2 years in Prison. I didn’t hear him say that he made a mistake in possessing weaopns because he is paranoid and coming from the hood he is naturally paranoid. You better go into the fight with Angulo with your Howdy Doody look because if you go into this as Oscar the Grouch, Alfredo is gonna wipe Oscar right off of your face

  • art sa boxing expert says:

cant wait to see but i think jail messed up kirkland now he has been exposed , should be easy ko for el pero, but then again angulo was also exposed with cintron so ho knows!

  • I know Boxing says:

You cant predict boxing! You never know the underlying circumstances. Getting sick of this bias writer. Cant wait til Sunday. I have my hopes but I dont even know at his best Kirkland is far better. At his worst he clearly isnt. He wasnt dominated in the Ishida fight, that wasnt even a fight you seen an exhausted body get hit maybe ten times total and go down due to fatigue. There are no excuses after this fight.

  • professor says:

Well its going to be a good one to see Kirkland has Ann back in this corner now its time to work James like Ann would say.

  • pedro says:

angulo shouuld have fought erislandy lara, angulo refused the figth. whats the point of facing kirkland, who was just tko by an unknown boxer….another mismatch.

  • BLUE DOG says:

    Bark, bark, bark…

  • B e a r c a t says:

what is the over under that Kirkland is back in prison soon????

  • Anonymous says:

This fight will be nuts. I can’t wait

  • MAD LION! says:

If its the old Kirkland then it will be the fight of the year.

  • BIG NOSE. says:

    Angulo by ko i hope
