Image: Alvarez-Cintron, Broner-TBA, Russell Jr-TBA on HBO on November 26thBy Jason Kim: According to Dan Rafael, the following fights will be taking place on HBO as part of a triple header on November 26th: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez will face Kermit Cintron, Gary Russell Jr. will fight an opponent still to be determined and Adrien Broner also will be fighting a yet unnamed opponent.

The Alvarez-Cintron fight will be taking place place in Guadalajara, Mexico. This will be the 21-year-old Alvarez’s third title defense of his World Boxing Council title he captured earlier this year against fringe welterweight contender Matthew Hatton. Golden Boy Promotions isn’t eager to put Alvarez in with someone that is any threat to beat him, hence Cintron is being brought in for what hopes to an interesting fight where Alvarez can look good and maybe learn a few things.

It’s likely Cintron will attempt to box Alvarez because he doesn’t have the chin to stand in front of him and slug for 12 rounds. Cintron’s skills have been deteriorating in the past year, which has saw him lose two out of his last three fights. Wins have been hard to come by for Cintron in the last three years with four wins, three losses and a draw during that time. The draw was against Sergio Martinez and that really should have been a knockout loss for Cintron had the referee not missed a knockout left hand that Martinez landed. The referee was talked into thinking it was from a headbutt by a pleading Cintron, and thus Cintron was saved from a knockout loss.

Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KO’s) was hoping to fight for the WBO super featherweight title against Ricky Burns, but the Scottish fighter instead bailed from the division by moving up in weight. Broner now is looking to take on a quality fighter for the vacant WBO belt in Cincinnati, Ohio. There is still yet to be an opponent, but Broner is interested in facing Eloy Perez.

Gary Russell Jr. (18-0, 10 KO’s), a light hitting featherweight prospect, is someone HBO is really high on. It’s unclear whether he’ll ever get beyond the contender stage as he lacks power and he hasn’t shown much skills in the way of defensive ability. He’s going to have to learn how to defend because he doesn’t have the power to go straight at the sluggers in the division. Russell needs to learn some head movement and how to pick off shots with his gloves. Don’t expect much in the way of opponent for him on November 26th, because he’s still just a prospect.
