Will Mayweather duck Khan as well?

Image: Will Mayweather duck Khan as well?By John F. McKenna (McJack): The chances of getting new World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) into the ring with World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquaio (53-3-2, 38 KO’s) seems to be as remote as ever.

Floyd is fresh off of his dominating, albeit controversial 4th round KO win over former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) on September 17. It was thought by many that Mayweather’s victory over Ortiz would clear the way for the “Dream Fight” between “Money” and “Pacman” but think again. To say that Mayweather is hard to pin down is an understatement and those betting on what Floyd will do next are sure to lose.

Mayweather, always in control in media settings seems to enjoy holding court with boxing reporters. When reporter’s questions turn to Pacquiao as they inevitably do, Floyd is especially adept at fielding them. When pressed too hard on questions related to Pacquiao, Mayweather often besmirches the reporter asking the question.

If all else fails Floyd goes into a rant and throws out the old “take the test” bugaboo that has worked so well against Pacquiao over the past couple of years. But let’s be real, the “take the test” excuse is wearing thin, save for some of Mayweather’s loyal, die hard fans. And does anyone truly buy the notion that Floyd just wants to help clean up the sport by demanding drug testing that is not called for by any organization in boxing? If that is the case then let me be the first to tip my hat to Floyd for such a noble gesture on his part.

It is becoming increasing clear to boxing fans that the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao will probably never happen. The idea that Floyd’s animosity towards his former promoter Top Rank CEO Bob Arum will prevent him from fighting Manny is another silly excuse. Some have even suggested that the soon to be 80 year old Arum should step down to allow the fight to happen is absurd. Over the past couple of years there has been a whole litany of excuses coming out of the Mayweather camp as to why Floyd will not fight Manny Pacquiao. The bottom line is, they are just that, excuses. If Floyd in his heart wanted to fight Manny the fight would be made.

Moving on to the next rising super star in boxing, it may be that International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) has the same fate in store for him as Manny Pacquiao has in attempting to get Floyd into the ring. Khan has been growing by leaps and bounds in his recent fights and trainer Freddie Roach has predicted that Khan will reign supreme in the pound for pound (P4P) rankings within the next two years. The 24 year old Khan has not yet reached his maturity as a fighter and will only get better, while Floyd at some point in the near future should exhibit some signs of slowing down.

There is no question that Mayweather is a genius inside the squared circle. His tactical brilliance, defensive skills, pinpoint punching accuracy and ring generalship are unquestionable. What is questionable however is Floyd’s reluctance to face the other best fighter of his generation Manny Pacquiao. The reluctance to face “Pacman” will impact Mayweahther’s legacy whether he cares to admit it of not. Meanwhile Amir Khan is racing in from the sidelines, also eager to do battle with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
