Saul Alvarez looking in excellent shape for Gomez mismatch on September 17th

By William Mackay: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s) is looking in superb condition ahead of his September 17th fight against the recently WBC elevated Alfonso Gomez (24-4-2, 12 KO’s) for their fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The Alvarez-Gomez fight will be a highly visible one, because it’s going to be shown as the co-main event on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz fight on HBO pay-per-view, as part of a split fight telecast. This is both Alvarez and Gomez’s moments to shine. However, the only shining will be done by the young 21-year-old Alvarez, because Gomez is way, way out of his league in this fight.

The problems for Gomez are as such: 1. he’s more of a welter than a junior middleweight. He only recently moved up to junior middleweight and was immediately given a high ranking of #7 by the WBC, despite being little more than a fringe contender while fighting at welterweight. 2. Gomez has no power to speak of. He’s really a light puncher who fights like a slugger, but is only capable of taking out 2nd and 3rd tier opposition. In his two fights against 1st tier opponents against Miguel Cotto and Jesus Soto Karass, Gomez couldn’t make a dent against either fighter. 3. Gomez has a small frame, and really is a bad fit for the junior middleweight division. It’s like taking a light heavyweight and throwing him in the heavyweight division and expecting him to succeed against the Klitschkos. Alvarez won’t succeed against Alvarez, because he doesn’t have the frame, the power, the speed or the defense to win.

In looking at Alvarez’s recent training photos, he is totally cut up and looks ready right now to step in the ring and annihilate Gomez in front of the world. This is what fully expect to happen.
